proportional ratio of a linear dimension of a model, map, etc, to the same feature of the original - 1:n. Use 1 for lifesize
DescriptionProportional ratio of a linear dimension of a model to the same feature of the original
Representsscale (Q10858537)
Data typeQuantity
Template parameter"ratio" in w:en:Infobox model rail scale, possibly others
Domain
According to this template: model railway scales, scale models, statues/sculptures, toys, prototypes, relplicas, anything else produced to a scale ratio. Map scales could either be included or as a separate property, I don't know which is preferable.
According to statements in the property:
rail transport modelling scale (Q436435), scale model (Q6498959), statue (Q179700), sculpture (Q860861), toy (Q11422), prototype (Q207977), replica (Q1232589), map (Q4006) or map series (Q1734578)
When possible, data should only be stored as statements
Allowed values1:n (for smaller than lifesize), 1:1 (for lifesize), n:1 (for larger than lifesize). n is a decimal number (note: this should be moved to the property statements)
Example
According to this template: Scalextric (Q1683328) 1:32, HO scale (Q911411) 1:87.1
According to statements in the property:

Larger than lifesize (1:n)[edit]

From the comments in the proposal discussion, shouldn't these be at <1? At least that what Andy and I agreed to. --- Jura 10:49, 15 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's my understanding but it wasn't my original proposal (from what the above appears to be taken). I haven no idea what the structure of the property is. Thryduulf (talk: local | en.wp | en.wikt) 22:35, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Why must Units be a qualifier?[edit]

The use of a units qualifier seems inappropriate for scale. I am deleting the qualifier (closing the popup window with no entry) whenever I'm adding the scale for maps. Trilotat (talk) 14:59, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Trilotat: You mean, why does the popup appear even if the property is defined as using no units? Good question indeed. One for Wikidata:Contact the development team. --- Jura 15:08, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jura1: Thanks. It does say optional, but as a scale, I don't think units is ever used. It's a ratio. "1:n" if smaller than lifesize; it's "n:1" if larger. It fouls up use of Quick Statements, too. I'm trying to determine what the workaround is when adding a statement but not the optional qualifier. I'll share it at Wikidata:Contact the development team. Cartographic work[edit]

I think scale would be useful under all types of cartographic works, not just maps. Other examples are cross sections and globes.

Citation[edit]

I removed the citation request for the scale, since it's nonsense. The scale for a map is generally on the map itself, it's not being there that is the exception.-- Darwin Ahoy! 20:39, 15 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
