Discussion[edit]

Also use for surface area?[edit]

Should this property also be used for surface area of, for example, planets? --Yair rand (talk) 03:28, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Yair rand: I see no reason why it cannot be used for astronomical bodies. -- Innocent bystander (talk) 18:13, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Standard[edit]

Do we have any good standard for how we should describe different types of area? Örebro Municipality (Q297718) for example, has

  • 1,373.02 km2 land area
  • 50.60 km2 lake/river water except the four great lakes
  • 196.97 km2 the four great lakes
  • 0.00 km2 sea water[1]

I don't really know what is best, to create new properties or by adding qualifiers. If I take Trois-Pistoles (Q142151), the Quebec "répertoires des municipalités" give two type of area[1]:
  • 9.66 km2 total area
  • 7.62 km2 land area
It's also easy to have the sea water area of most protected areas in Canada. --Fralambert (talk) 03:06, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My proposal:
Land area: Use P2046 with P518:land (we have to agree about which item for land though)
Water area: same as above
Sea water area: same as above
River/lake water area: same as above
Special cases, like the Swedish example above: Use special designed items in P518.
Total area: Use P2046 without any P518

Floor area[edit]

I used this property for gross floor area (Q1186036). Is this the right property to administer floor area, and how to qualify that?--Hannolans (talk) 10:46, 29 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

See Property_talk:P7903#Area change about the new qualifiers for significant event (P793) to track boundary changes. --- Jura 15:29, 14 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Area of constellations[edit]

I think area of constellations and other parts of celestial sphere (effectively solid angle) should be separated as another property. --Jonah.ru (talk) 07:27, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple values for area[edit]

I'm working on adding some info on archaeological sites in WD. Many archaeological sites, especially in the Near East, are complex locations with multiple areas that can physically separated from each other but belong to the same site (upper town/lower town, etc) and that, in literature, are often described separately in terms of size. But area has a single value constraint which doesn't allow for that. See for example Q3411130. Is there a better way to organize that information then I'vee done here? --Zoeperkoe (talk) 06:12, 7 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

municipalities & the sea[edit]

For municipalities total area = land area + land waters area. Don't add the sea water area to the total area of the municipalities. Wkentaur (talk) 11:40, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
