Type “country (Q6256), administrative territorial entity (Q56061): item must contain property “instance of (P31)” with classes “country (Q6256), administrative territorial entity (Q56061)” or their subclasses (defined using subclass of (P279)). (Help)
Exceptions are possible as rare values may exist. Exceptions can be specified using exception to constraint (P2303).

Value type “AC power connector (Q215292): This property should use items as value that contain property “subclass of (P279)”. On these, the value for subclass of (P279) should be an item that uses subclass of (P279) with value AC power connector (Q215292) (or a subclass thereof). (Help)

Structured ontology[edit]

I tried to structure the different plug types a bit. Results are at User:T.seppelt/AC power plugs and sockets. Warm regards, -- T.seppelt (talk) 15:14, 3 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Category:Mains plugs has pictures. Maybe we could find items for each plug type (as opposed to sockets or socket-plug standards).

@Jura1: I choose now AC power connector (Q215292) as super-class for all socket-plug standards because each standard defines a plug as well as a socket. I think it would create a mess if we have a seperate hierachy for AC power plug (Q24237713) (+ for AC power socket (Q24237712) and AC power connector (Q215292)). Have also a look at the graph which is linked at my user subpage. We would have to deal with sub-standards three times then (plug, socket, plug-socket) --T.seppelt (talk) 04:51, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I think it gets messy if we mix several things. The property is called "plug type" so it should include plugs. Ideally we would stick to the list in the proposal (w:Mains_electricity_by_country). I know the samples kept getting messed up, but creating the items before was mentioned as something we wouldn't be doing. We can still link the standards with "subject of" or some other qualifier.

Regarding the property we can choose I think: Do we want to use the hierarchy of AC power connector (Q215292), AC power socket (Q24237712) or AC power plug (Q24237713)? Since the standard of the plug is always defining also the standard of the socket, AC power connector (Q215292) is in my eyes most meaningful. This is also the only item which has a complete set of subclasses for all types. I agree that the property description is a bit confusing then, event though it states Wikidata item of this property (P1629)AC power connector (Q215292). The descriptions could be changed to "power plug and socket type". The second question would be if we also want to allow DC systems as values. Then we would need a new item which is subclass of (P279)electrical connector (Q2119531) and has AC power connector (Q215292) and DC power connector (Q16000075) as sub-classes. -- T.seppelt (talk) 08:48, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think the property should be about plug-socket standards. Now it is confusing that - as proposed - the title is about the plug, while the main subject is socket. When I changed the description to combine the name with the subject however, Jura1 oposed. Lymantria (talk) 08:53, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As subject, I had chosen Q215292 as it was the closed, but when this property was created, we noticed that its labels (and descriptions) are a mess across languages: it's now listed at Wikidata:Interwiki_conflicts/Unresolved/2016.
If we want a clean solution, we should probably avoid items with too many links to Wikipedia. How about items with labels (in English) like "type [A-Z] plug"?
--- Jura 09:05, 4 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Please have a look at User:T.seppelt/AC power plugs and sockets. I tried to structure it a bit better and find some rules. In fact we need 3 items (if we want to go for this solution): "type [A-Z] plug", "type [A-Z] socket" and "type [A-Z] plug-socket system / plug-socket connection". I think the first step is to define the difference between the 3 superclasses and to sort out which sitelink belongs to which item. Then we can think about the plug-items again. -- T.seppelt (talk) 08:24, 5 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Should we include both, e.g.

  • UK > P2853 > Type G > [somequalifier/P805] > BS 1363 plug
  • UK > P2853 > BS 1363 plug > P794 (P794) > Type G

-- Jura 15:18, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should be only United Kingdom (Q145)electrical plug type (P2853)BS 1363 (Q1528507). Anything else would only be confusing and wouldn't have any benefits. BS 1363 (Q1528507) should have the label "type G plug-socket system". What we could also do is to use a new property "IEC plug type identifier" (datatype string) with values like "A", "B", "C" which would be used on all subclasses. [1] could be a source. -- T.seppelt (talk) 17:19, 7 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
