Expand scope to "Poster"[edit]
Basically, I think the original proposal forgot theatrical posters, and other such posters exist. It feels like "film poster" is more of a subtype, but having the scope as "poster" would allow such things as the image properties at, for example, Q2709440, Q470739, Q594492, Q3009151, Q2918663, Q926468, you get the idea - to be classified more specifically. If you don't want to look, those are all theatrical works with posters, usually from their premières, as their primary image.
This seems especially sensible since.... there's a filter which calls for this property to be used if "Poster" is in the file name. For example, from Q2709440,

- The value for image (Poster for Jules Massenet's La Navarraise with Emma Calvé in the rôle of Anita.jpg) should match “please use P3383 ("film poster") instead” (regex: (?i)((?!\b(poster)).)*).
That's... Not a good regex as this stands. Film posters are a reasonably large, but hardly majority class of posters.
I don't see how the specification helps us, either. Why not expand the scope to "Poster", linking to Q429785? It'd cover everything, and if the datapoint is a film.... I think people will know it's a film poster.
Now, this is my first time proposing this type of thing. I've been told to ping everyone from the original discussion, so... @Escudero, FShbib, Jura1, Mushroom, Micru:. It was also suggested I poke any relevant Wikiprojects, but unless people think I should poke the film wikiproject, or theatre or something, this feels a bit Wikidata-specific for that. Thoughts? The alternative is to delete the regex, and/or add "Poster" as a property, with this as a subtype, but, honestly, it feels more like "Poster" is the main property here, and we could specify "film poster" with - those additional information things you can add to properties that I can't think of the name of offhand? - I think we can easily change the format constraint on P18. I don't see an advantage of combining film posters with other material. The current scope make it easier to maintain. --- Jura 06:50, 5 July 2019 (UTC)
- As I said, I'm not an expert on Wikidata, but is it normal to have properties that specify like this? Because the word "film" feels like an odd inclusion. (Especially as that the poster related to a film would be immediately apparent from the fact that the item data said it was within the "film" class. I suppose we might occasionally use film posters to identify an actor, but that seems like it would be rare.) - It's pretty much only ever used on films of various types - query. Five people, two written works, and a smattering of other one-offs like cartoon characters and operas. Note that Commons has (very approximately) 9-10k posters under "movie posters", and 5-6k under "theatre posters" (counting all files in subcats, depth 4), so there's clearly a lot of potential use for theatrical material as well as film. Support expanding scope to "poster" more generally - I assume the vast majority of cases would be films or plays, but I can also see circumstances where we would want to use advertising posters for other material. No benefit to a new property to divide films/nonfilms. Andrew Gray (talk) 10:57, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

- I was more thinking about eg "poster for a circus". Book covers are a whole different issue and I agree those should be a seperate property; they're not the same as posters at all. Andrew Gray (talk) 11:51, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
