Clinical trials is too narrow a constraint for this property[edit]

I think clinical trials is too narrow a constraint for this property. I would like to use Research intervention for agricultural experiments and apart from the constraint this would be a suitable property.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Richardostler (talk • contribs) at 09:08, 23 April 2018‎ (UTC).[reply]

@Richardostler: I am not expecting that clinical trials are a restraint. This should be available for any item which is an instance of an experiment. What barrier do you see? Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:21, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluerasberry: I agree this should be available for any instance/subclass of an experiment. I've used this property for several long-term agricultural experiments (sub class of experiment) e.g. Broadbalk long-term experiment (Q41331872), but it shows the issue warning: "Entities using the research intervention property should be instances of clinical trial (or of a subclass of it)". Clearly clinical trial isn't appropriate for my use case. I have in fact added experiment as a type constraint for the "Research intervention" property, but it doesn't seem to be recognised. Should add I'm fairly new to this so it could well be an error on my part! Richardostler (talk) 12:34, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Richardostler: Everyone is new to Wikidata, so everyone is a little confused.
Can you tell me how to see this error message? The usage guidelines say that this property is for "clinical trials" and "experiments". In the item you shared, it is an long-term experiment (Q6672146) and a agricultural experiment (Q52146473), which are both subclasses of experiments and should not give error messages. I just added "clinical trial" to be a subclass of experiment also. I am not sure how to configure properties but if you are getting an error message I would like to learn why and what to do about it. @Bluerasberry: If you got to Broadbalk long-term experiment (Q41331872) and scroll down to the research interventions, when I'm logged in, for each of the statement items (e.g. nitrogen fertilizer), I see an exclamation mark icon. Clicking on that I see the warning mentioned in my previous reply. If I'm logged out I don't see this warning.--Richardostler (talk) 17:24, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Richardostler: Okay, now I see the problem and the exclamation points. There is a problem log at Wikidata:Database reports/Constraint violations/P4844. There is general documentation at Help:Property constraints portal.
I do not know how to fix this, but I gave a go at editing Property:P4844#P2302 to add that it can be a subclass of an experiment, which I thought could have fixed this situation. I think this is incorrect, because I think that whenever someone adds an instance of a constraint, then it also applies to the subclass.
Perhaps you look at the documentation and situation also, then let's go to the talk page of that "property constraints portal" and ask for advice. If you would like to take the lead and request help there then I would follow you. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:20, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluerasberry: Ok I'll have a look at the documentation and go from there. Thanks for your help.--Richardostler (talk) 20:30, 25 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bluerasberry: This should be ok now. Instead of creating a new type constraint value for each class you want to allow, the solution is to add all allowed classes to the same type constraint value. See the updated property - Property:P4844#P2302. Strictly, clinical trials is probably redundant since it is a subclass of experiment.--Richardostler (talk) 16:44, 26 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Observatories[edit]

I used this property to state what a program of environmental monitoring : Copernicus Programme (Q1531636)  View with Reasonator View with SQID, to state that for example one of the goal of the program was to monitore variables to forecast air quality. The constraint does not match right now, either we need a better way (please say if you know one currently), or to broader the constraint (I want to discuss this first). author  TomT0m / talk page 10:34, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
