The regular expression

\D\D([\d\D]\d)?

looks a little weak to force only a non-digit "\D", and we should say that we want a large letter from A to Z. Thus, I suggest to change the regular expression to

[A-Z][A-Z]([A-Z\d]\d)?

Scope of Property

The FIPS 10-4 standard is no longer an official standard, but the US military is still updating it. They are now called "Geopolitical Codes (Formerly FIPS PUB 10-4)", cf. http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/gazetteers2.html . At least one of the new code is already added, see User_talk:Ahoerstemeier#FIPS_10-4_.28subdivisions.29. If the amount of statements with this properties will be larger, we should think again about the scope of this property and if and how we want to "mix" the (dead) FIPS 10-4 codes with the Geopolitical codes. --Zuphilip (talk) 07:57, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

This afterlife of FIPS 10-4 will however come to an end soon, as the DoD agencies are now required to move to the GENC (Geopolitical Entities, Names, and Codes) standard - which is basically an extension of the ISO3166-1 and -2 standard [1]. Thus I think we can easily extend the scope of this property to this intermediate version "Geopolitical Entities and Codes" as well as the older versions of FIPS 10 (e.g. FIPS 10-3), making the latest code for a given entity the rank "high" and any older codes normal rank and add the date by which it became obsolete with the end time (P582) qualifier. Formatter URL and Third-Party Formatter URLs no longer correct

The CIA has changed the address of The World Factbook (Q97142711) and the formatters for this property are no longer working. Country URLs in the The World Factbook now have the full name of the country, for example https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/antigua-and-barbuda/ and https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/jordan/. They no longer use the FIPS code. Can someone fix this property? And should we now have a new property for The World Factbook ID? UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 23:49, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
