Records of the curator of American art, Josephine Walther. 1927-1937 (English)
These records are possibly the only records extant for the American Art Department for this period and reflect the nature of curatorial activity when the departments were very young. Miss Walther was brought in as general assistant by Dr. Valentiner and showed such enthusiasm and knowledge about early American Art and artifacts that she soon was advanced to curatorial status. Her correspondence with collectors and art dealers in this country and abroad (some of it in German) shows her expertise and discrimination in evaluating objects as possible additions to the Museum collection.
