Barium Sulfate: Properties, Uses, and One Misuse / p.5 / Barium Sulfate ... / ... / These properties, and its high density, led some unscrupulous, if ingenious, flour merchants to adulterate their flour with it to increase the weight. Apparently this enterprising scam had become fairly widespread when Bachem and Günther made the astute observation that people eating bread made from the flour seemed to suffer no ill effects from it. Encouraged by this observation, they tried barium sulfate as a gastrointestinal contrast agent.
