Actually, the Barrs were in Paris while the auction took place and had given exiled German art dealer Curt Valentin, who owned the Buchholz Gallery, money donated by Mrs. Resor and others to bid. ‘I am just as glad not to have the museum’s name or my own associated with the auction,’ he wrote MOMA manager Thomas Mabry on July 1. Many French dealers, artists, and newspapers were outraged that anyone had bid on art stolen by the Nazis. (English)
