The first Church here and the town were burned by the Dutch in 1640. The second Church, built of stone in 1643, was partially destroyed by fire in 1648. The third Church, rebuilt in 1650, likewise was destroyed by earthquakes. The present Church and the Convent were constructed between 1687 and 1700, but were seriously damaged by the earthquake of August 20, 1937. (English)
