Statements

1968
The inception of the X age rating was added, despite the first plan having only 3 age ratings other than this rating, however there was an additional age rating named X. The X age rating was not trademarked by the MPAA, and thus, would not receive the MPAA seal. The company can self-apply the X age rating or any other age rating that wasn't trademarked by the MPAA. The X age rating was retired because the X age rating was used and self-applied by the pornography industry. Sometimes, the "Not Rated" age rating is used or self-applied, even as of today, but no age mentions. The "Not Rated" age rating is an age rating, like the age rating X, that was not trademarked by the MPAA. However, MPAA replaces its X age rating with the NC-17 age rating in 1990. The NC-17 age rating would be trademarked and be copyrighted by the MPA and would receive the MPA seal, so the new NC-17 age rating was only applied by the MPA. However, distributors may still apply the "Not Rated" age rating. (English)
