Deduced vs. inferred[edit]
Regarding terminology in this item and its subclasses, "inferred" should be the preferred term for this family of items rather than "deduced".
My understanding of deductive reasoning is that it takes a form like the following:
- If a work has a title statement in a certain language, the work is in that language
- Work X has a title statement in Language Y
- Therefore, Work X is in Language Y
This is not a sound deductive argument because the first premise is false; titles are often listed in the same language as the work, but not always. The actual reasoning being used in these cases is more like a statistical syllogism, which has the almost same form but adding "most of the time" to the first premise. This is a type of inductive rather than deductive reasoning.
Luckily the term inference includes both deductive and inductive reasoning, which saves Wikidatans from having to consider the nuances of what kind of logical reasoning they're using. While "deduced" is still likely correct for a few of the items (e.g., inferred from coordinate location (Q96623327) and some involving dates), "inferred" is still correct in all cases. John P.
