Identity of subject
[edit]This photo was identified as Henry Howard, 19th Earl of Suffolk.
The Welsh Portrait Collection simply describes the subject as 'Henry Howard'. It appears to be a different Henry Howard:
The photo shows a man in a colonel’s uniform wearing (among other awards):
- The insignia of the Companion of the Order of the Bath;
- The India General Service Medal (1854–95),
- Queen’s South Africa Medal.
The 19th Earl died while holding the rank of Major, and was never a colonel, was never admitted to the Order of the Bath and was not present at any relevant Indian campaign or during the South African war.
