Nom français / French name[edit]
J'ai aujourd'hui renommé le nom français de grande ville des États-Unis vers city aux États-Unis (sur le modèle de town aux États-Unis. Cette page traite du type de municipalité (voir l'article fr:City (États-Unis)), qui n'est pas lié à la taille de la ville même si l'utilisation courante du mot correspond bien à grand ville (pas au type de municipalité, mais ce n'est pas l'objet de la page). Il y avait des articles de municipalités de 200 habitants, qui ont le statut de City (voir article) mais qui étaient répertoriées en tant que grand ville, ce qui n'a pas de sens en français. - J'ai trouvé une source fiable pour le nom en français. J'ai du coup changé le libellé en me basant sur elle. La mis la source pour sourcer la propriété "nom officiel". Definition[edit]
There are several issues with concept of a 'city of the United States'. First and foremost, there really is not such a thing as the United States does not define what a city is, nor authorize their establishment or regulate their maintenance. Cities, such as they are, exist by authority of the states within which they exist. Each state has its own legal structure for constituting, defining, governing, and dissolving cities (and other municipal governments). Thus, a government recognized as a city in one state would be a village in another state, or something else in a third state.
There are indeed settlements that would fit a general definition of 'city' located within the United States to be sure, but to label the group 'city of the United States' and describe them as specifically a type of 'administrative division' gives the impression that the members of this class are not the general urban agglomeration commonly called a city, but instead are specific government constructs that meet a defined legal standard according the named parent government. Since that named government (US) in this case does not provide said legal definition, this class, as named and described, is a misnomer.
We should rename this class "city in the United States" as that would be accurate and describe it as any city located within the United States. Josh Baumgartner (talk) 12:33, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
