- I don't understand your question, since phonetic properties (IPA transcription (P898) and also I suppose transliteration or transcription (P2440)) all have qualifiers saying to what languages it applies?
- Unless you are talking about Soundex (P3878), Cologne phonetics (P3879) and Caverphone (P3880)? But they are added semi-automatically by a script converting from the writing form, and do not care about "real" pronunciation. Caverphone and Soundex are optimized for the English language, while Cologne phonetics are optimized for German. They give information to what other names in these languages would be pronounced in a similar way et may be related names but they don't say anything about any real pronunciation, not even in English or German. They only say "if it's written that way, then names written these and these ways may be pronounced in English/German similarly". Nevertheless I feel unsatisfied while names spelled (transliterated) differently in Russian are in one item. - @Infovarius:. The thing is, most names will have several different transliterations. I somehow doubt you would agree to split Иванов into two different items, one transliterated "Ivanov" and the other "Ivanoff"…
- If there are Russian with the family name Бернардо, of course we would create the item but if they are not (if it's only used as a transliteration), I see absolutely no reason to. We create names which exist in the language(s). (Well, we may have had Portuguese immigrants who became Russian and are really named Бернардо, but until we encounter this case, I won't assume Бернардо exists as a Russian name). --Harmonia Amanda (talk) 15:43, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
- I think the difference is that Ivanov/Ivanoff is used quite randomly but Bernardo imho is transliterated quite systematically - according to original language pronunciation. It is also strange to see such different name like de:Paul (IPA=paʊ̯l, Russian=Пауль), en:Paul (IPA=pɔːl, Russian=Пол), fr:Paul (IPA=pɔl, Russian=Поль) in one item Paul (Q4925623). --Infovarius (talk) 08:11, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
