Problem with restaurant chains[edit]

restaurant (Q11707) is a subclass of architectural structure (Q811979). This requires that its instances be individual restaurants, e.g., the McDonald's restaurant at the corner of Main and First in My City. However, restaurant chain (Q18534542) is a subclass of restaurant (Q11707). These, e.g., McDonald's, are not valid instances of architectural structure (Q811979).

Something needs to be done, but what?

Option one would be to move restaurant chain (Q18534542) out from under restaurant (Q11707), and perhaps under a new class to cover both restaurant chain (Q18534542) and restaurant (Q11707).

Option two would be to move restaurant (Q11707) out from under architectural structure (Q811979).

Which one is better? Does anyone have any comments.

If not, I will likely implement option two as many of the direct instances of restaurant (Q11707) are actually restaurant chains.

In the end I removed restaurant chain as a subclass of restaurant, as that leaves more structure intact. Restaurant chains that are incorrectly instances of restaurant will have to be modified directly. Peter F. Patel-Schneider (talk) 16:58, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

classification of restaurant[edit]

A better classification of restaurant is a business as opposed to an organization, so I have changed the superclass. The class business is classified under organization to restaurants remain organizations. However, this classification is itself suspect and needs further investigation. Peter F. Different(?) classes[edit]

@Alan ffm: please explain how do you understand the difference between restaurant (Q11707) and mass caterer (Q27077054)? --Infovarius (talk) 09:05, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It is explained in mass caterer (Q27077054) and in linked https://eur-lex.europa.eu/eli/reg/2011/1169/oj --Alan ffm (talk) 22:01, 18 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Alan ffm: Assuming that English label on mass caterer (Q27077054) is wrong (as it contradicts all sitelinks) I failed to find any info about "предприятие общественного питания" in your source. Please elaborate. --Infovarius (talk) 20:36, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alan ffm: please merge them back or explain. --Infovarius (talk) 21:04, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
" Assuming that English label on mass caterer (Q27077054) is wrong..." - No, it is not wrong, just read the above-mentioned legal act. --Alan ffm (talk) 13:03, 11 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Alan ffm: Oh, sorry. If we define mass caterer as "any establishment (including a vehicle or a fixed or mobile stall), such as restaurants, canteens, schools, hospitals and catering enterprises in which, in the course of a business, food is prepared to be ready for consumption by the final consumer" then it's ok. And it even fits sitelinks. But this is the only place where "restaurant" can be found... Can you please help to understand it's definition in English? --Infovarius (talk) 13:27, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
