Use[edit]

8 years on, I still think it makes no sense to use this item in instance of (P31). population (P1082) is the property to use for population. -Zolo (talk) 14:20, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

 Support to remove all instance of (P31)million city (Q1637706) statements. --Haansn08 (talk) 19:13, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose As long as this item and population-related similar items (Q174844, Q1549591, etc.) exist, there is no reasonable justification to remove this item. If you think this item should not exist, you can nominate it for deletion.--BSRF 💬 14:33, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@BSRF: those item should not be deleted, since they contain sitelinks (I think there are issues with some of the associated Wikipedia article, but that is another topic).
On the other hand using those items in P31 is useless. population (P1082) provides more precise data in a more usable format.
Actually big city (Q1549591) is worse that this item, as it gratuitously states that cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants are called "big city", which is just not true (except in German, for statistical purposes). I recall having a discussion with the first user who added this item in a large scale years ago (he is no longer active here). He stated that he added big city (Q1549591) because the item described something else than a population side. That could have been a defensible point if that had been true, but actually it is not. --Zolo (talk) 15:53, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 Support Completely agree @Zolo @Haansn08 Lectrician1 (talk) 22:05, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Support We already have population (P1082), no need to dump same info to instance of (P31). --Jklamo (talk) 11:55, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Cleaned-up. No instance of (P31) usage at the moment. --Jklamo (talk) 13:15, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose Sometimes values of P1082 aren't enough for this information and it is convenient to model with this class in P31. --Infovarius (talk) 20:06, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Infovarius How? If the population is greater than one million, than it's a million city, no? Lectrician1 (talk) 12:45, 27 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
