The web site very widely mentioned in the MNIST articles/data is no longer legit in the sense that hitting URLs there now yield a login prompt, which is value equivalent to a dead link.
I was doing slight clean up on the MNIST article when I noticed this unexplained "official website" thing whose value was not based on any content in the web page.
As I have no idea what else links to this information and no explanations were prominent I am not going to touch it.
