Date of birth[edit]
Beethoven's date of birth is not known, although his baptismal date is known to be 17 December 1770. Both English WP and Deutsch WP state his date of birth was "probably (wahrscheinlich)" 16 December and the Français WP gives his d.o.b. as "16 ou 17 décembre 1770". Without any certainty and with the variance of sources, it is irresponsible to give an unqualified date of birth here as if it were fact. I've therefore removed that particular entry. --RexxS (talk) 17:45, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
- Why don't you delete 17 December as dob? --Infovarius (talk) 22:16, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- Perhaps we should have. We don't know when he was born because there's no documentary evidence. We do have evidence of his baptism on 17 December 1770 and we can guess he was born on the 16th or 17th; but it's only a guess. It's pretty hard to show you sources when my argument is that no sources exist confirming his date of birth. If it's any help, here's what English Wikipedia says:
- There is no authentic record of the date of his birth; however, the registry of his baptism, in a Catholic service at the Parish of St. Regius on 17 December 1770, survives. – Thorne, J. O.; Collocott, T.C., eds. (1986). Chambers Biographical Dictionary. Edinburgh: W & R Chambers Ltd. p. 114. ISBN 0-550-18022-2.
- Perhaps it's best to just keep both 16 and 17 December as values and let the reader make up their own mind about the quality of the information. I'll leave it now, rather than have to try to prove a negative. --RexxS (talk) 22:43, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- We can play with ranks (like I changed 16 December). If we have a source that dob is uknown we can set "unknown" as a normal rank, and the proposed dates as a deprecated ranks. --Infovarius (talk) 16:38, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
