Hey, y'all. The understanding has been that association football/soccer would be labeled as "association football," and secondarily also known as "football" and "soccer". American football, which everyone calls "football" in North America, has been labeled "American football" to distinguish it from Australian rules football, rugby union football, association football, and Gaelic football. If someone is going to keep changing "association football" to occupy the primary title of "football," then American and Canadian football editors are going to claim that primary title too -- especially when the label "football" as applied to American and Canadian soccer clubs creates confusion with American and Canadian "gridiron" football. - @Dirtlawyer1: It's a case of label disambiguation, and that's what descriptions are made for. It's the same for people : if two people have the same name, we don't change the labels, we describe them. Alternatively the labels in en-gb languages for example can be changed, but I don't know the standard conventions. - @TomT0m: Yes, I understand the disambiguation concept, but the primary name of the sport is "association football" in most of the English-speaking world (and "soccer" in the United States and Canada). As I explained above, the term "football" is inherently ambiguous because of the existence of multiple other sports also referred to as "football" in English. As recently as April 2015, the primary English-language label for the Wikidata subject profile was "association football" [1]. These changes are the result edit-warring by a hardcore group of users who seem to believe that association football/soccer should be labeled as "football" to the exclusion of all other sports also known as "football". I have requested further input from editors from WP:FOOTY, the WikiProject for association football, regarding the mislabeling. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 18:38, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
