P39[edit]

What is the rationale behind the rule not to use it with position held (P39)? -- H005 (talk) 18:17, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I also have the same doubt...--DarwIn (talk) 17:55, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Geertivp, Dcflyer: You have been adding these restrictions, could you please document why? -- H005 (talk) 08:38, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that burgomaster (Q177529) is a subclass of mayor (Q30185). According to the property contraints of position held (P39) the more specific function burgomaster (Q177529) should be used an not the more general one mayor (Q30185). On position held (P39) there is property constraint (P2302) none-of constraint (Q52558054) against mayor (Q30185). Maybe there is also a possible dependency of applies to jurisdiction (P1001) and/or country (P17). Geertivp (talk) 19:37, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Geertivp, Dcflyer: while I understand that burgomaster (Q177529) is a subclass, I still don't understand why mayor (Q30185) couldn't be use with P39. With this restriction, how could we indicate that a person has been the mayor of a town? Thanks, Dirac (talk) 18:21, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dirac, it appears that the preferred usage of mayor (Q30185) is the subclass for a more specific Wikidata item, with an instance of public office (Q294414), elective office (Q17279032), position (Q4164871), etc. For example, mayor of a place in France (Q382617), mayor of a place in Spain (Q5663900), mayor of a place in the Netherlands (Q13423499), mayor (Q670106), mayor of Annaka (Q56436780), and Mayor of Annapolis (Q98276644). If an applicable item does not exist, a new one can be created, using applies to jurisdiction (P1001) for the particular location. If there was just a singular position held (P39) of mayor (Q30185) and one would query it, the result would be a multitude mayor (Q30185)s with an almost equal multitude of time spans, overlaps, and geographic locations. — Dcflyer (talk) 19:12, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct, but burgomaster (Q177529) is not really a more specialised form of mayor (Q30185) like the other examples you mentioned. Looking at the descriptions in the various languages and flipping throuzgh the connected Wikipedia articles, it appears that most of the articles deal with a family of words that combine the words "Burg/Bürger/..." and "Meister/Master/..." in various variations, and with various meanings in different languages and areas of the world. It's not about a concrete position at all, and hence it makes no sense to force someone in using this item for position held (P39) instead of mayor (Q30185). It only makes things worse.
As I see it, burgomaster (Q177529) should not be a position at all, and neither a subclass of mayor (Q30185), but a subclass of word family (Q4331688), and those few of the Wikipedia articles linked to that describe the position of a mayor it should rather be moved to mayor (Q30185). Next, mayor (Q30185) should allowed to be used with position held (P39) instead of mayor (Q30185).
At least that would be the logical thing to do. Problematic is of course that already so many items have falsely been linked to burgomaster (Q177529) because of the (in my opinion wrong) instruction not to use mayor (Q30185) with position held (P39). It will be a lot of work to fix that. -- H005 (talk) 20:05, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If I may add, there are currently 13 753 items using mayor (Q30185) with position held (P39) (SPARQL request). Many of us seem to think that this is the way to use it, for once, and it is a lot of items to fix if we want to keep this constraint. Dirac (talk) 20:27, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. Probably it would be best and easiest if we create a new item for the current meaning of burgomaster (Q177529) and move all Wikipedia articles that match it there, and then merge burgomaster (Q177529) into mayor (Q30185) and fix the constraints in position held (P39). -- H005 (talk) 08:29, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@H005: what do you mean by « merge mayor (Q30185) into mayor (Q30185) » ?
Also, there are only 79 items with burgomaster (Q177529) (SPARQL request), a number of items that can easily be managed. Dirac (talk) 11:47, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I corrected it. 79 are far less than I expected. -- H005 (talk) 12:23, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dcflyer: do you agree with H005 and I? If not, what is the next step? A vote or something? Dirac (talk) 02:35, 15 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Since I have no answer, I will remove the restriction in 5 days, ie. on March 25th, unless someone wants to provide new arguments on this topic. Dirac (talk) 13:01, 20 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
