Primary or secondary colour[edit]

I see that the label for red has been changed to secondary colour in (at least) Italian. This is not correct. Red is secondary in the CMYK system, but primary in all other colour systems (RGB, NCS Munsell etc) --Chandra Varena (talk) 10:06, 17 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for subclass-of=entity[edit]

I asked ArthurPSmith, who made this change, and he said:

"red" is a color. "color" is not a color. Their ontological status is quite different, so "subclass" makes no sense; the relation "instance of" (P31) was there all along and is correct. dark red (Q5223370) subclass of (P279) red (Q3142) is fine - the more narrowly defined color is subsumed within the broader one. There's no such parent relation available for the primary colors.

(from his talk page). I thought to copy it here to avoid others being confused. JesseW (talk) 03:35, 7 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't find this convincing. Is red a colour? It depends on what colour means and how individual colours (if there are any) are related to red (Q3142) and color (Q1075). It also depends on what red means. If red (Q3142) is any of the colour impressions that humans generally call red, then maybe red (Q3142) should not be a colour, and instead be a subclass of colour. Instances of red (Q3142) would then be the spectra (or something like that) that humans tend to call red, such as RGB(255,0,0). These would, of course, also be instances of color (Q1075), thus the validating the subclass relationship between red (Q3142) and color (Q1075).
In the end, it is more important to have a consistent relationship between color (Q1075) and the various colours. The current situation with a mix of instance of (P31) and subclass of (P279) is the worst of all possible situations. Peter F. Patel-Schneider (talk) 18:01, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
