position held or occupation[edit]

What property should Wikimedian in residence (Q3809586) be used with – position held (P39) or occupation (P106)? Currently, occupation (P106) is used almost everywhere (query), but Denny argues that position held (P39) is better, and I think I’m inclined to agree. What do you think?

It's an occupation. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:20, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also: the list produced by that query seems rather short. Can we fill in some of the gaps? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:25, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding gaps, over the last month I've started going through the outreachwiki table to create wikidata items (~50% done so far). Any assistance welcomed! I only just came across this conversation, so I've been using occupation (P106). If people disagree, is there a way to mass-change them all or have I made us stuck with P106? I'd have througt husing the same P for all of them would make queries more useful. ping Marcus Cyron, Pigsonthewing, ÀlexHinojo, MartinPoulter, Daniel Mietchen, Ctac, Geertivp, Keilana, Trizek (WMF), bluerasberry, antanana, Titodutta, TaronjaSatsuma, Missvain, Stinglehammer, Esh77, Kellyjeanne9, Giantflightlessbirds, Bijay_chaurasia, Tulsi Bhagat, La_Mantis, Jason.nlw, Blahma, SimonP.

Is this really of such a big importance? And is it not possible, that it is one time this, the other time that? -- Marcus Cyron (talk) 21:32, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I also don't think it's a huge deal, so I won't fight one way or the other, but I would prefer it to be consistent. Occupations I would expect to point to an occupation, i.e. something like researcher, politician, author, etc., whereas position held I would expect to point to a specific position, i.e. mayor of Rome, professor of economics at the University of Yokohama, etc. The latter, since it might often not have a specific item, could then be represented by a value and qualifiers.

So given this particular case, it could be either. In order to make it consistent though, I would definitely make all of them positions held. Whether they are also occupations, would be a one-by-one decision, which, in my case, I think would be "no". --Denny (talk) 22:22, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"mayor of Rome" yes. That's a position; as is "Wikimedian in Residence at Google". Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 22:37, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please ping my volunteer account for this conversation, not my WMF account. My WMF account has nothing to do with this topic.
When I was a WiR, it was my position. For other people, they are WiR as part of a job description (webmaster/WiR, librarian/WiR...). The property should be based on sources, for each case. Trizek from FR 09:40, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would use position held (P39) with qualifiers like start time (P580), end time (P582), employer (P108), work location (P937); and use occupation (P106) when there are no dates nor other qualifiers. Geertivp (talk) 09:42, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

label[edit]

Should this item be labeled Wikipedian in Residence or Wikimedian in Residence? Currently it’s the former, but my impression was that the latter, more general title is the more common one. --Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 20:56, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedian in Residence. All Wikipedians-i-R are Wikimedians-i-R, but not vice-versa. Qualify with "stated as" for Wikipedians-i-R, if necessary. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:22, 19 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

+1 Wikipedians in residence could be a sub class, but honnestly, you can't be a Wikipedia-only resident, since most GLAM and all have to deal with, at least, Commons and Wikidata. Trizek (talk) 12:01, 20 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
