Does this class item apply only to theatres or to other types of performing arts buildings?

[edit]

At a meeting of the performing arts community, the concern was raised that this class item might only apply to theatres, not to other types of performing arts buildings. I explored the Arts and Architecture Thesaurus and here is what I found:

  1. In the Arts and Architecture Thesaurus, class hierarchies for rooms and places by building type only has the six following subclasses: exhibition building spaces, health facility spaces, religious building spaces, stable and barn spaces, tomb spaces, and theater spaces. With the exception of "theatre spaces" and "tomb spaces", all other are broad categories of buildings and facilities. One could therefore presume that the "theatre spaces" category was also meant to be a broad category, in spite of what the label suggests. And no matter what, the thesaurus does not provide a closer match to a concept of "performing arts building spaces".
  2. One of the subclasses of "theatre spaces" is "orchestra pit". This feature is also present in opera houses, not just in theatres. And many theatres don't have an orchestra pit.
  3. The performing arts buildings class has a much higher ID number than theatres (buildings). I am guessing the performing arts building class was created after "theatre (buildings)" and after "theatre spaces" (note "performing arts buildings" is a superclass for theatres, concert halls and other similar types of buildings).

Based on the above observations, I think we can safely presume that the theatre space class was meant to be used not only for places called "theatre", but for any similar type performing arts building. --Fjjulien (talk) 20:23, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
