Here, unclear usage of English has caused a mix of two separate entities: a position in medieval organizations (like Hospitallers) and a rank of modern awards (like CBE). Some articles linked here only mean one, some another. The thing is, in most countries, people who receive "orders" as state awards do not make up an organization (real of formal). But English (also French and Dutch) use the same word for both, while actually these shouldn't be conflated.
