Classification[edit]

I changed the instance of (P31) statements, as this item is a class of type of sound, which should not be mixed up with types themselves. For the rationale see Help:Classification. author  TomT0m / talk page 08:54, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Definition of "emit unit"[edit]

It is hard to find much online. I found this in Google Books: "Pike defines an emic unit as “[...] a physical or mental item or system treated by insiders as relevant to their system of behavior and as the same emic unit in spite of etic variability” (Pike 1990:28)." Dan Polansky (talk) 19:31, 21 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

And I find: "An emic unit, such as a phoneme or morpheme, is an invariant form obtained from the reduction of a class of variant forms to a limited number of abstract units."[1]

It is really abstract and hard to understand; a much better job of clarification is required, and perhaps some decent source.
