Conflation

[edit]

This looks like a conflation of two different economists: 1. David I. Stern, energy and environmental economist, professor at Crawford School of Public Policy, The Australian National University. (He is an item at Q30069011) 2. David S. Stern (born 1945), Professor Emeritus at U.C. Berkeley, an economist of education Dsp13 (talk) 17:48, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted the deprecation of the human value (Q5) on the P31 property. My idea was that an edit generating so many constraint violations has to be wrong. However, I admit there are problems with this item.
I consider the initial page crucial for determining whom the item belongs to. The external identifier (Scopus, P1153) suggests that the researcher is David (Ian) Stern (and by checking the displayed papers it doesn't look conflated). His CV can be found here: Public CV (sterndavidi.com) and his publications here: ‪David I. Stern‬ - ‪Google Scholar‬.
Unfortunately, some editors later added external identifiers that belong to David S. Stern. His CV with publications can be found here: Microsoft Word - D. Stern vita 1-15.doc (berkeley.edu). Those identifiers are P213, P214, P244, P268 and perhaps even more. It seems there is no Wikidata item for this researcher (and I didn't spot any merge in the history of the item for David I. Stern).
I see two options. Either to just remove properties not belonging to David I. Stern. Or to create a new item for David S. Stern and move all the mentioned properties to it.
What do you think, @Dsp13? PKalnai (talk) 16:25, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for looking into it so thoroughly! I think creating a new item for David S. Stern makes sense, and removing DSS's traces from here. Do you think that would then make this item the same as Q30069011, so that a follow-up merge to Q30069011 would be sensible? Dsp13 (talk) 23:25, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would all make sense. So I've started a new item about David S. Stern, Q123334587, and moved all the related properties to this new page. Also, I added the mutual P1889 relation with Q54802141. However, some of the external identifier's profiles would still contain incorrect or conflated data, for example Worldcat Entities, https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJcC3fW8GfhVqWPYg39Rrq.html, but I think it's better now. And nice find, would you merge the duplicate item, please? PKalnai (talk) 09:08, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
