Typical case of Ottoman/Turkish women who had to use the father's name (or the husband's name) as a kind of family name as there was no surnames in Turkey until 1934. After being known as Bedriye Tahir for a long part of her life, she received the surname Gökmen (having to do with the sky, "gök" in Turkish) as a pilot. --E4024 (talk) 03:28, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
