Middle East versus Near East[edit]

The German, Polish and Spanish terms for "Middle East" may be literally translated as "Near East". Nevertheless, they refer to the same region, while the regions that literally translate to "Middle East" in these languages are further to the east (including the Indian subcontinent). --Bujo (talk) 18:46, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, Middle East (Q7204) seems to be the modern English understanding of the Middle East, and Near East (Q48214) seems to be the English "Near East" which is no longer used. The Near East is an important historic concept and still deserves its own Wikipedia articles and Wikidata item. But it looks like there's confusion in Wikipedia language links for these two Wikidata items. We should better disambiguate them. I'm not sure how to do this well, especially in languages other than English. Runner1928 (talk) 19:35, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Similar for Bulgarian. For reference I'm adding a comment by a leading Bulgarian linguist: [1]. --Nk (talk) 15:17, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Afghanistan[edit]

My assumption is that Afghanistan can be added as part (country) since it is so per UNESCO thesaurus, and Wikidata can then decide whether to deprecate this, but still keep it in for documentation. --Dan Polansky (talk) 12:20, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
