[edit]

The page Minetest (Q89114416) should probably be merged with Minetest (Q722334). Kind ping to first contributors @Arlo Barnes, Dexxor: --Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 17:29, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The descriptions disambiguate: one is the game engine, the other a game built using the engine. See https://wiki.minetest.net/FAQ#What_is_Minetest_Game.3F Arlo Barnes (talk) 17:32, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Merging these two items is not possible for the above reason. Regards Kirilloparma (talk) 01:51, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, thanks. I'm happy because I've learned a bit this difference during the Minetest stand at FOSDEM 2024. I've still a doubt thought: are we talking about the very same repository, the very same logo, social networks, Ubuntu package, etc.? If yes, I wonder if we should try to merge having a description like "video game engine, and video game" so to stress a bit on the "new" focus (game engine) but without the need to keep a different concept up-to-date and in-sync, since we can maybe have just an additional "instance of" in the original one. Thanks for your opinion. Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 08:33, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Hm, but then how would we say that the game uses the engine? Arlo Barnes (talk) 15:30, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We could probably say that it is written with itself, and it would be both semantically and I think also technically correct. In addition, it would also involve a bit of additional fun in my opinion. I mean, this would be lovely in my opinion: Minetest (Q722334)software engine (P408)Minetest (Q722334) Valerio Bozzolan (talk) 13:41, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll agree that it's an amusing statement, but it's not really accurate: Minetest-the-engine isn't written using Minetest-the-engine's providences, but rather using IrrlichtMt (a fork of Irrlicht) and C++. Minetest-the-game isn't written using itself, but rather the Minetest engine. This basic relationship is true even if for convenience's sake both use many of the same social media outlets to release development news. Arlo Barnes (talk) 22:02, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK thanks for the example. So they also have different repositories, isn't it? So the values https://github.com/minetest/minetest and https://github.com/minetest/minetest_game ? In that case, I still do not understand if authority controls are OK. I mean, should Minetest (Q89114416) (game engine) be connected to the Ubuntu package, snap package, etc.? Thanks for your opinion. I mean, if we can increase the amount of authority controls that have different values between the two entities, it would be super to support your description. Hm, now that you mention it, a handy way to do this might be to make an item for the informal organization (Q646293) that develops both these packages, and that would be the one that gets the contact info statements. Arlo Barnes (talk) 11:05, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
