Coordinates

[edit]

@Neo-Jay:: Thanks for contributing. I have deleted the coordinates section, because I think is misleading for the reader. -Theklan (talk) 17:36, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Theklan: Why did you remove coordinate location? The coordinate location I added, 42°52'59"N, 1°56'8"W, is the same as that in Q47588 (Basque Country). If it's misleading, it should also be removed from Q47588. A similar coordinate location, 42°52′55″N 1°55′01″W, is used in en:Basque Country (greater region). Is that one acceptable for you? Could you provide a coordinate location that is not misleading so that I can add it to this item? --Neo-Jay (talk) 22:49, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Neo-Jay: If you see the only article including this data (eu:COVID-19_gaixotasunaren_2019-2020ko_pandemia_Euskal_Herrian) you get the coordinate and creates a map. As a reader, I understand that the pandemic is happening in that precise point, what is misleading, as that point is simply the geographical center of a region. Is there any reason to have coordinates as a mandatory property? -Theklan (talk) 23:02, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Theklan: On Wikidata (and Wikipedia), a country as big as Russia (Q159, and see also en:Russia) can, and should, have a coordinate location. It does not mean that Russia is very tiny and located at that precise point. As the coordinate location is the geographic center (or administrative center) of an item, 42°52'59"N, 1°56'8"W is the geographic center of the coronavirus pandemic in Basque Country. Coordinate location (Property:P625) is the key property to generate a map for Wikidata query. So it should be included in this item. --Neo-Jay (talk) 23:46, 11 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Neo-Jay: Yes, I understand the purpouse of having coordinates and that the geographical center is the best option, but I still think is not accurate to show a point where there's no COVID emergency or outbreak, as it can be very misleading for someone who doesn't know that the point represents the geographical center of the country. I would expect Wuhan marked, but not a place in the middle (literally) of China. -Theklan (talk) 07:20, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Theklan: Could you clarify your position? Do you want to improve the coordinate location to make it more accurate, or want to remove coordinate location from every coronavirus-outbreak item? If you want to improve it, fine. But removing coordinate location will make it impossible to generate a map for Wikidata query. Wikidata is for those reasonable readers, not for those who even don't understand what the coordinate location represents. In my view, if a country can have a coordinate location, then the coronavirus outbreak in that country can also have a coordinate location. You may change it from the geographic center of the country to somewhere the outbreak occurred. But I oppose removing it from the item. --Neo-Jay (talk) 07:39, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Neo-Jay: Right, maybe this is something that may be considered with a wider perspective. I will move all the conversation to the Village Pump. -Theklan (talk) 10:13, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Theklan: OK. We can discuss this issue at Wikidata:Project chat. I have posted my comment. --Neo-Jay (talk) 11:26, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
