Description conflates archivers with data compression

[edit]

Not every compression program operates on a set of files; gzip(1), bzip2(1), and Google's Brotli are all examples of software that compresses a data stream; the confusion likely stems from their common use in reducing the filesize of archive files produced by commands like tar(1), cpio(1) and shar(1). (Though in all fairness, most modern archival programs support compression by default). ⸺ Alhadis (talk) 05:42, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed; I fixed the English description but the other languages still need cleanup. In principle, we also need to distinguish compression software (Q877886) from compression algorithm (Q2755432), which includes things like audio or video stream compressors which are often lossy and not intended for use outside a digital container format (Q167772), as they produce a content format (Q5165081) rather than independent files. 2620:15C:84:7:B9EC:7E95:E698:9BCF 18:35, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
