English label[edit]

Hi @Dirtlawyer1, Szenti Tamás, Jura1: Can we have a discussion here on the English label for this item (association football player (Q937857))? It seems you are all unintentionally reverting each other, changing it between soccer player, association football player, football player, and footballer. Can we get some consensus here on what would be best first? Cbrown1023 talk 21:33, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I vote for association football player, considering the sport is officially called association football in most of the places that play it. Since the United States is the only one that calls it soccer, I'd suggest not calling it "soccer player". Football player is probably the most common term, but that could be easily confused with gridiron football player. Footballer is very colloquial and has a similar problem to football player, since it's not very specific. Association football player seems to balance what it's actually called with the need to disambiguate, so I'd prefer that term. Cbrown1023 talk 21:33, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I haven't edited the Wikidata profile for the article for over a week, and both of my edits were back-to-back. As long as the various "also known as" labels (i.e., association football player, footballer, football player, jugador de futbol, soccer player) are maintained, I am happy to defer to the guys who edit association football articles regularly as to what the primary title/label should be. No reverting here. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:09, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote his/her (Jura1) on talk page: „Hi! The football player is a false common name and misunderstandable. This sport have correct name: association football or soccer.--Szenti Tamás (talk) 15:17, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

French label[edit]

In application of Wikidata:Requests for comment/Gender neutral labels for occupations and positions in French, the French label should now include the male and the female form (joueur ou joueuse de football). PAC2 (talk) 06:55, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
