about this template[edit]

This template doesn't make much sense, since you can't add a template in the main space (just confirmed). It would be more practical to add Bene's JS code to the site-wide common.js and make sure it works properly. Ajraddatz (talk) 00:49, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Support IMHO it's easier if the admins only have one page to watch. --Morten Haan (talk) 00:53, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
 Support At the moment I must see this section to know what pages are tagged with this template, while I only give a look to Watchlist to know if there is a deletion request for an item. I think too that it's more useful to add Bene's code as proposed by Ajraddatz. Restu20 01:04, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I'd prefer the addition of Bene's script as a gadget, as if we start now adding every single useful script by default in the common.js, we'll quickly end up in a fully bloated website. Best regards — Arkanosis 01:34, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't proposing adding any others. This script is pretty much essential to tagging pages for deletion here (unless we put a link to the RfD page in the sidebar). Without it, people wouldn't immediately know how to request deletion of a page, since the conventional methods wouldn't work. Ajraddatz (talk) 01:37, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
+1; gadgets are for users who work here regularly, these users should know where to request a deletion. The deletion request script is also for users who don't know that deletion works defferent here. --Morten Haan (talk) 01:46, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we should delete (!) this template, though. The "delete" template is standard across all WMF wikis - whichever one I go to, I expect {{delete|reason for deletion}} to work. This, that and the other (talk) 06:33, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
 Support with the caveat that SWMT members should be aware of this when creating global JS. However, the delete template will still be useful for non-mainspace pages, where almost all spam occurs anyways.--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:12, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • If the template does continue to exist, it should prompt people to add an entry to the RfD page. We could accomplish this with an abusefilter at some point, or a notice on the template. Ajraddatz (talk) 12:53, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
 Oppose Please do not delete this template. Newbies would search first for such a template. I used it several times in the past assuming that is clear to the administrators that beside the talk page the (Main) namespace page should be deleted as well. If check boxes could be used / implemented one should use them. The last time I used the template was at Talk:Q12963693:
delete|obsolete; see '''{{Q|141090}}''' <!-- encryption -->; delete both [[Q12963693]] and [[Talk:Q12963693]]}}

Desired effect[edit]

Yes, thank you @Matěj Suchánek:. What I was trying to do: find the right page on WD:RFD. That is, instead of having Wikidata:Database download/eo, the categorization should be Translations:Wikidata:Database download/22/eo on Category:Wikidata:Deletion. —Eihel (talk) 11:32, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Understood. Your edit just changed the sortkey, so it couldn't really achieve that. I believe the template does already categorize the "Translations:" page, so this just about (not) having the other page categorized. {{IfTranslation}} could help if this categorization is not desired. --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 11:41, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bof, nothing serious, Matěj Suchánek. I was thinking about FULLPAGENAME. But I don't understand why PAGENAME is not categorized as "Wikidata:Database download/22/eo" instead of "Wikidata:Database download/eo". That's why I stopped there, blocked by an interrogation. But it would be more logical and more accessible for everyone. —Eihel (talk) 11:57, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is a feature of templates. The magic words inside them are evaluated in the context of the page there are transcluded in. There is no way for the template on "Wikidata:Database download/eo" to know it comes from "Translations:Wikidata:Database download/22/eo". --Matěj Suchánek (talk) 12:30, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Especially because technically it doesn’t come from there: the Translate extension effectively substitutes the Translations: page. When nominating a translation unit for deletion, I usually use {{#ifeq:{{NAMESPACE}}|Translations|{{speedy|reason}}}} so that the template doesn’t appear on the Wikidata-namespace page (and thus doesn’t categorize it, either). I don’t recommend building the namespace check into this template, though: sometimes one might want to nominate the Wikidata-namespace page for deletion, which would be impossible if this template didn’t appear on translated pages not in the Translations namespace. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:37, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
