"State of use: in use" on infrastructure which is not in use

Hi! I've noticed [https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q108222896&curid=103489536&diff=1626873355&oldid=1486987576 this edit], where it looks like "state of use: in use" has been massively added to a batch of items. But who checked if the items are really in use? This tramway line is still in the planning stage and it certainly won't be in use until 2026 at the earliest. See also [https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q108222900&curid=103489539&diff=1626873360&oldid=1486497247 this other edit]. I'm a bit worried, because I see the same property has been automatically added to lots of railway stations in my area and I would like to be assured that somebody checked if all of them are really in use or not :) Thanks, Fabio

Ciao Fabio, yes, I did a mass edit with a prior query to find any line/subway station that has neither dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) nor end time (P582) nor date of official closure (P3999), nor state of use (P5817). So it was useful eg to help build that map Map of transport in Naples (Italy) (query) which requires everything be having state of use (P5817) = in uso(Q55654238). So yes, mistakes can have slip through the cracks, of course! You are free to correct and eg on your example, put progetto architettonico(Q811683).

Here's a map of https://w.wiki/59WS that are supposed to be functionning in Italy.

Thanks! But I see a big difference between an item with no information on its state of use, and an item with "state of use = in use". I would *not* automatically infer the latter from the former, or am I missing something? Of course manual editors can intervene and fix the mistakes, but it would be far easier for me to check whether items without "state of use" are in use or not, than to check all items marked as "state of use = in use" to see if they're actually in use...

Yes ? I prefer to fill up and clean down rather than to add one per one as it is impossible to check one by one and hopefully it's a collaborative database. Have you got any file/table with disused railway stations in Italy ? And this query https://w.wiki/5A6z links to stations in Italy supposed to be in use but poorly filled.

Gerd Fahrenhorst (talkcontribs)

Hi Bouzinac, could you please revert these edits? There are hundreds of railway stations that now have a wrong "state of use" !

Bouzinac (talkcontribs)

Hi could you please list them, give some examples or any database to cross-check? I'd be happy to correct.

Gerd Fahrenhorst (talkcontribs)

No, I can't because I dont have the know-how to identify your edits, and have no experience in mass-edits. I think we should revert all edits from this mass edit because there is no way to detect which was correct and which was not, so as a result this gave Wikidata less quality than before. It was a bad idea to assume that railway lines always are in use by default, and also to assume that every station at an active line is active.

Bouzinac (talkcontribs)

I don't believe it is a good idea to revert since 95% (I don't know the exact rate) are indeed functionning. Crosschecking and detecting inconsistencies may help find the 5% that are wrong...

Gerd Fahrenhorst (talkcontribs)

Well, but WHO should check many thousands of stations? WHO? If you think this is the way, please do it by yourself and do not expect fictitious persons to clean up after you added hundreds of errors. Most items have no observer.

Bouzinac (talkcontribs)

It has always been the case. For instance there has been bots adding dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) to items who were in rebuilding process, leaving people think the item was disused. No one noticed that for years... And yes, I'm still checking, not leaving the stuff behind, don't worry. In the other hand, who were adding in use (Q55654238) ? Very few people. For instance, currently that query https://w.wiki/5DRB returns 268 stations that are supposed (probably not) to function but they do not have any coordinate location (P625). Still checking...
