A PCC WikiProject for [organisation].
Aim and Scope
[edit]We are currently participating in the PCC Wikidata Pilot Project. Our aims from the project are to:
- Accustom ourselves with how to use WikiData; the inputting of data, linking to external records, establishing workflows.
- KTop
- Batch upload of data from own records.

[edit]Record Creation:
[edit]To assist in the record creation of our project we have collated a list of useful properties that can be used to describe an identity. These have been sorted into mandatory properties, preferable properties, and enhancing properties.
Mandatory Properties
[edit]The following table contains a list of properties that are mandatory for the project and should be used for each record created.
The table has 3 headings.
- Property - These are particular fields/headings used to provide details about an identity.
- Expected value - There are three main types of values that we will be using; string which allows for freehand text to be input, item which requires whatever is input to match with a pre-existing WikiData item, and time which needs to be entered in line with the Gregorian or Julian calendar (i.e. 2012; 2012-05 (for May 2012); 2012-05-01 (for 1st May 2012).
- Usage note - a short explanation on how the property should be used.
Property | Expected Value | Usage note |
---|---|---|
Label | String | Preferred form of name |
Description | String | This is used to qualify an identity and should be a very short phrase. If known include the date of birth and death, nationality, and occupation/type of work i.e. "Dutch post-impressionist painter (1853-1890)" |
instance of (P31) | Item | This should be set to human (Q5) and states what the created WikiData item is. |
title (P1476) | String | Works done by the identity should be entered using this property. Link the title of the work to the library's WikiCommons record via the references function, if applicable. Is the other team in the library creating a WikiData item for the work as well as uploading the images to WikiCommons? If so we should use notable works and not this property... the process would be different. |
given name (P735) | Item | Forename(s). This has to match an existing WikiData name heading i.e. Chris (Q339346) |
family name (P734) | Item | Family name. This has to match an existing WikiData name heading i.e. King (Q535214) |
Preferable Properties
[edit]The following table contains a list of properties that should be used for our project to further describe an identity if the information is available.
Property | Expected Value | Usage note |
---|---|---|
occupation (P106) | Item | Identity's occupation. You will be required to use an occupation previously established in WikiData i.e. academic (Q3400985) |
date of birth (P569) | Time | Date/Year when identity was born. |
date of death (P570) | Time | Date/Year when identity died. |
floruit (P1317) | Time | Date when identity was active - only use this if birth and/or death date are not available. |
place of birth (P19) | Item | City and/or country in which the identity was born. |
writing language (P6886) | Item | Language they wrote their works in. |
pseudonym (P742) | Item | This name heading will need to match to another WikiData item. If their alternate identity does not currently have a WikiData record and you wish to use this field, a separate record for the pseudonym will need to be created. |
Enhancing Properties
[edit]The following table contains a list of properties that can be used for our project to further describe an identity if the information is available. Whilst this information is not a necessity, it does provide a more complete record.
Property | Expected Value | Usage note |
---|---|---|
country of citizenship (P27) | Item | Country in which the identity was a citizen of. |
residence (P551) | Item | City and/or country where the identity resided. |
field of work (P101) | Item | Identity's area of study, expertise, or work. You will be required to use a term previously established in WikiData i.e. art of painting (Q11629) |
employer (P108) | Item | Name of identity's employer. The employer will need to have an established WikiData record i.e. Sony Group (Q41187). If the employer does not have a WikiData page you will either need to create one or not include this field. |
position held (P39) | Item | The position or public office that the identity currently or formerly held. This does not relate to titles of an identity. |
owner of (P1830) | Item | Name of firm or organisation that identity owns. The firm or organisation will need to have an established WikiData record i.e. Sony Group (Q41187). If it does not have a WikiData page you will either need to create one or not include this field. |
educated at (P69) | Item | Name of institution where the identity was educated. This can be for any level of education. |
sex or gender (P21) | Item | Fixed gender terms i.e. female (Q6581072) |
work period (start) (P2031) | Time | Date when an identity started working/was first active. |
work period (end) (P2032) | Time | Date when an identity stopped working/was no longer active. |
Identifiers:
[edit]It is possible to link records of an identity to records of other institutions. The following table contains properties that can be used to do this. At a minimum the records we create should link to the corresponding ISNI and LC record, if possible.
Property | Value |
---|---|
VIAF ID (P214) | VIAF ID # |
ISNI (P213) | ISNI ID # |
IdRef ID (P269) | SUDOC ID # |
Library of Congress authority ID (P244) | Library of Congress ID # |
Please note that there are further institutions in which an identity can be linked to and the aforementioned are just examples.
Test Project
[edit]To familiarise myself with the use of WikiData I am currently creating and/or editing records for members of the teaching staff in the School of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds.
