Users by language

A Wikimedian from Portugal (GMT +0 DST). Distracful. WD is more technical than the other projects and while I can explore thru UIs most of WD's power is useless to me; I'm limited to manual editing. I don't know neither query nor programming languages, the only computer languages I know are markup ones[lower-alpha 1], so I stand out from the others here for that; Otherwise I'm a polyglot: fluent in English and Portuguese, my native language is Portuguese[lower-alpha 2] and my first was French, which I'm relearning. Plus thanks to mutual intelligibilities, I can handle some Castilian[lower-alpha 3] and other Spanish languages,[lower-alpha 4] and improvise for the others in the Romance branch, obviously getting progressively harder and harder. Don't worry, I know about the Scots Wikipedia controversy (Q115755869).

Misc feedback[edit]

As I browse/use Wikidata I might try to put down some impressions (fleeting, easy to forget) and thoughts (also easy to forget), which might not apply as I learn more. so take it with a salty grain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Clarify what to do when there's no proper sources to cite for a given item, specially at the lower end of notability
  • Wikidata is all about data, let's make the metadata about a given item (and edit history) more obvious,[lower-alpha 5] to help users better judge the quality of our content, and therefore we should show:
      • the number of total/recent pageviews/edit count/amount of different editors/amount of manual edits vs (semi)auto (which is correlated to the amount of human attention, which is correl. to 'quality');
      • along other things link How many items link back to it?
      • the amount of references or lack thereof, and the sources of those refs (as correlators of reference reliability),[lower-alpha 6]
      • and how many of the edits are (semi)automated vs manual?
    • Same as the above but for the other projects: turn the gets-the-job-done sitelinks-and-badges system into something that clarify if it's a permastub or a list, whether it's a mediocre/decent but not GA/FA tier article, (that wip ORES score is for that innit?), and other things that matter just as much as (or more than) the content it might contain
  • Ability to semi-auto create lists according to rule, like Category: namespace but based on UI-inputten query (could be a potential Wikipedia feature?)

UI and UX[edit]

Make the UI more user-friendly for the casual/passerby/distractful editors (not power-users) like me:

  • table of contents, let me jump to the identifiers/sitelinks right from the top;
  • Ability to visually collapse a given statement (scrolling thru all of a software's version history is tiring)
  • Better highlight the rank button, and the lack/presence of references, they can be easy to miss specially if you're distracted
  • Hover-popup gadget should be adapted to ignore the non-wikitext links, instead of giving technobabble on them[lower-alpha 7]

QoL tweaks:

  • up/down ranking an item's description by lang. Upranked ones would always display: used to identify the item's main lang, from which one should translate from. filler/copypasted ones like 'wkmd project/category page' etc are downranked by default.

Footnotes[edit]

  1. maybe a script lang or 2 too
  2. surprising innit
  3. better know as Spanish, as it is the country's ""'main'"" language
  4. except for Basque
  5. not like as part of the statements, but show like an infobox with chosen metadata
  6. as in: national libraries are high, respected academia is high; infotainment is low, user-genned content sites are low; etc
  7. I know it's not meant for WD, but I need it for the diffs/hist; in the meanwhile I have turned-on the WD-centric hover gadget
