Armenian[edit]

Note: this section is outdated, as an independent Western Armenian Wikipedia has created now.

Variants[edit]

  • Western Armenian (hyw, previously hy-arevmda)

The language code situation here is complicated. ISO 639-1, ISO 639-2 and ISO 639-3 originally had a single entry with the name "Armenian". Western Armenian was later given its own ISO 639-3 code, "hyw". "hy"/"hye" are still called "Armenian".
The IETF language subtag registry registered subtags for Eastern and Western Armenian using "hy" as the prefix for both (effectively considering them both to be variants of "hy"). After the creation of "hyw", both were deprecated in favour of "hy" (without any subtags) for Eastern Armenian and "hyw" for Western Armenian.
Ethnologue listed Eastern and Western Armenian as dialects of Armenian (link) but since the creation of "hyw", has been updated (link) to move Western Armenian to "hyw" and list "Eastern Armenian" as an alternate name instead of a dialect.
This means that "hy" content might contain Western Armenian.

translatewiki:Portal:Hy is not specifically marked as Eastern Armenian but presumably should now only contain Eastern Armenian, translatewiki:Portal:Hyw has been created for Western Armenian.

These are different orthographies.

Within lad-latn, ladwiki allows a variety of orthographies. (See lad:Usador:StevenJ81#Pages on Orthography for links to several varieties.) Except for the main page itself, the project does not encourage multiple lad-latn pages, and it tries to weed out lad-latn stubs where a different full lad-latn page exists. But from the project's perspective, it is better to encourage participation than to squelch creation of parallel versions. The project does encourage parallel lad-hebr pages, even if stubs, partly in recognition that lad-hebr is actually the original and definitive system.

Multilingual sites[edit]

Commons, Incubator (not yet supported), MediaWiki, Meta, Wikidata and Wikispecies are multilingual sites. They combine all the different language pages into a single wiki, so where other wikis (excluding the ones above) only have a single page for a concept, these wikis can have multiple pages.

Some of the pages are direct translations, e.g. mw:Project:About and mw:Project:About/de.

Others are like Wikidata:Project chat (en) and Wikidata:Forum (de), which are conceptually the same thing.

In both cases, the pages would be undoubtedly linked to the same item if they were on separate wikis.

Multiple namespaces[edit]

As well as the above problems, Commons also has pages for the same concept in multiple namespaces:

My understanding is that Commons users currently embed Wikidata IDs into Commons pages in order to fetch information from Wikidata (e.g. commons:Institution:British Library includes a Wikidata parameter which seems to be how it fetches the authority control links) because they cannot create direct links between pages and items. While it is technically possible to create lots of extra items in Wikidata and link them back to the main item which has all of the information, Commons users appear to be against the creation of lots of extra items whose sole purpose is to create an indirect link between a Commons page and a Wikidata item.

I haven't tracked down all of the relevant projects which exist on a Wikipedia rather than separately. From what I remember, they use separate namespaces.

Alemannic Wikipedia[edit]

Although Wikidata doesn't yet support the Incubator, its issues are similar to other wikis. I don't know how Incubator support will eventually be added, but solutions to the problems above could make Incubator support easier or vice versa.
