Discussion on AN[edit]

There a discussion at Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard#User:Aiminer_bot that would benefit from your input. Bovlb (talk) 16:13, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please file a rename request through Special:GlobalRenameRequest. Once the request is approved, you can place an unblock request here. Use the following format to make the unblock request: {{unblock|1=<the reason for your unblock request>}}. —Yahya (talkcontribs.) 16:30, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unblock[edit]

I have unblocked you. As it is not clear if you are operating a bot or not. Could respond to the messages here to clarify the situation? Thanks. BrokenSegue (talk) 15:53, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dear admin, sorry for the confusion. We just read the info page about bots and we are definitely not a bot in that sense.
We were trying to fill out an academic genealogy tree in AI. We have a proprietary database of well-known AI labs, AI works and AI researchers (mainly labs in CV, NLP, robotics) across United States. We found that wikidata mostly covers scientific field whose main venue are journals, while AI researchers only publish to conferences.
Although we had some automation to pull entries from our database and create a page for a human to submit, this requires a human to press a button every time for every item. In addition, submissions on every page only happens after a human preview the changes and press another button. So 10 items would require a human to manually interact at least 20 times. We haven't scaled this up yet since we are new to the platform.
Our database is limited and seems to lack certain fields wikidata/wikimedia wants e.g. source and license of the images. Since it has caused some trouble we may just skip those fields. Aiminer bot (talk) 22:46, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries and welcome to the project. Generally we suggest that people get familiar with the platform before making lots of bulk edits (which is why you caught admin attention). Are you checking to make sure the items you are creating do not already exist in Wikidata? We have some coverage of more prominent researchers already. For example you created Philip Isola (Q124815792) but Phillip Isola (Q113644175) already existed (you should Help:Merge them in these cases).
Also you may be interested in populating GitHub username (P2037) for some of these people.
I'm a little confused by your use of "we". Generally we advise people not to share accounts if they don't need to (though they it is allowed). Are you using the majestic plural (Q250885)? See our policy at Help:Usernames_and_accounts and Wikidata:Alternate_accounts. If you have any questions I suggest you check out Wikidata:Project chat.
Welcome again. BrokenSegue (talk) 00:10, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We work as a small team to maintain our database and the automation pipeline. I will comply with the rules if account sharing is absolutely impermissible. The case for Philip Isola seems to be an accidental mistake. I will go back and check whether we need to merge some entries. Most of the articles should be good, though. I will also pause for a bit to learn the system better, as we do want to add images of researchers. Aiminer bot (talk) 00:41, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not familiar with commons's policy on bulk uploads so you'll want to reach out there to figure out if what you're doing is ok. BrokenSegue (talk) 03:03, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Uploading images is done at our sister project Wikimedia Commons, there is an upload page at c:Special:UploadWizard. It is indeed important that the uploaded images have a free license (licensed by the photographer), in most cases this license needs to be verified through c:Commons:Volunteer Response Team. Happy editing. --Lymantria (talk) 21:11, 20 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
