Adding institutional Twitter accounts

[edit]

First, I just wanted to say thanks for adding a bunch of new Twitter account information and cleaning out some clearly incorrect ones. What script/method are you using to extract Twitter handles from web pages? When I tried something similar in the past with the Name Suggestion Index (Q62108705) I ran into cases where multiple accounts would be linked from the same page; did you come up with a good way of dealing with that? —Vahurzpu (talk) 01:58, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vahurzpu: I've been using a few different methods. Most of which I've been hand auditing for "sanity". There are often multiple legit matches per item and sometimes there are very ambiguous matches where reasonable people would disagree (e.g. where do you put a twitter account "run" by an executive but is named for a building like "the kremlin" which represents an office). One method I've been using is stealing data from google's knowledge base with a browser extension I wrote. I've been manually reviewing about 10% of the matches imported in that way and the quality is pretty good but not perfect. Another way I've been importing twitter handles has been by fetching item's official websites and scraping for twitter links on the page (using a custom python script). Those are very noisy and I've been hand auditing basically 100% of those and even then I'm not perfect. Also, if a page includes multiple twitter handles I've been discarding all of them. I've also been doing purely manual data-entry for some items. I am only automatically adding twitter accounts to items that currently have no twitter associated. I'm very pessimistic that any kind of auto-name-matching system will reliably work without human review. BrokenSegue (talk) 02:36, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks; that's a similar method to what I had been using in the past. —Vahurzpu (talk) 02:39, 19 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple knowledge panels for a single thing?

[edit]

Hi there. Any advice on how to handle referencing when a thing has two entities in the Google Knowledge Graph, that is it has gid's/mid's? This is the case with Ken Klippenstein right now - see https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q97940221 and how I tried to make sense of situation. Thank you! QRep2020 (talk) 17:29, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@QRep2020: I'm unsure of this particular case but it's totally possible for one entity to have two google KG ids (or freebase). It just means google screwed up and assigned the same entity an ID twice (or we disagree about what an "entity" is). Just include both of them. BrokenSegue (talk) 17:53, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ok cool that's what I did. And the "!" exception that pops up when they're two listedres, ignore that? QRep2020 (talk) 18:54, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@QRep2020: yeah I ignore those all the time. If you want you can designate one id as preferred and it'll go away. BrokenSegue (talk) 18:55, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Works versus editions

[edit]

Hi BrokenSegue,

Please take care only to add book edition properties to instances of version, edition or translation (Q3331189), or to items that (appropriately) have the edition or translation of (P629) property. An edition-specific property is not intended for a literary work (Q7725634). —Ringbang (talk) 18:10, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wwwyzzerdd?

[edit]

Hi!

I noticed lots of good data added with “import via Wwwyzzerdd for Wikidata”. What’s that? :)

Jean-Fred (talk) 08:36, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jean-Frédéric: it's a browser extension I'm developing that lets you edit wikidata items directly from a corresponding wikipedia page. It's not quite ready from prime time yet and has a lot of rough edges. I'll share it publicly once it's more beta than alpha-software. BrokenSegue (talk) 14:16, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer! Good luck with the development. Jean-Fred (talk) 16:34, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@AntisocialRyan: Hey thanks for the interest. It is in the google chrome store but life has been busy I haven't had the time I expected to iron out a few of the last bugs/quirks. You can try it out here but the FF release isn't ready. If you do use it and have feedback feel free to drop it here or on github. BrokenSegue (talk) 02:06, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! I will play around with it! AntisocialRyan (talk) 03:32, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[WMF Board of Trustees - Call for feedback: Community Board seats] Meetings with the Wikidata community

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?

In this regard, two rounds of feedback meetings are being hosted to collect feedback from the Wikidata community. Two rounds are being hosted with the same agenda, to accomodate people from various time zones across the globe. We will be discussing ideas proposed by the Board and the community to address the above mentioned problems. Please sign-up according to whatever is most comfortable to you. You are welcome to participate in both as well!

Also, please share this with other volunteers who might be interested in this. Let me know if you have any questions. KCVelaga (WMF), 14:32, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominating Q93472084 for Deletion. Not notable

[edit]

Q93472084 is a retail outlet with no wikicommons links. Nothing in wikipedian or elsewhere required to be notable. --Dprophitjr (talk) 23:02, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

May need to do a bit more undoing

[edit]

It looks like some of the operating system edits weren't undone fully (see Quake II: Ground Zero (Q2429827) for example), I just fixed another I saw earlier as well. Do you have a way to undo them still? Nicereddy (talk) 04:15, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I intentionally didn't undo the addition of the OS claims (just removal of platform). But you can revert those by going to https://editgroups.toolforge.org/b/QSv2/4923 and clicking undo. BrokenSegue (talk) 14:09, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Did you only undo the edits for those marked as video games? It looks like expansion packs were missed, for example Neverwinter Nights: Shadows of Undrentide (Q305212). Nicereddy (talk) 02:42, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nicereddy: No I think I just missed some batches somehow. I didn't filter on anything. Thanks for catching these. BrokenSegue (talk) 02:44, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Would appreciate backup on Property proposals

[edit]

I'm getting a bunch of pushback (only from Jura) on daring to ... mark property proposals that are lacking consensus as such. Since I did so based on your comment, I'd be grateful for some backup and support. Or if you didn't intend me to actually do that, clarification. JesseW (talk) 14:33, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Q105725387

[edit]

Hi! seismic classification (Q105725387) isn't just about Italy. It could be any kind of seismic classification. Maybe I could create an Italian seismic classification item with that parameters and add it in the instance of (P31) property of the items I've created.--Ferdi2005[Mail] 06:30, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ferdi2005: Ah ok, I was unaware. There other seismic classifications? Yeah I think there should be one item as a superclass for all the italian classification items then. BrokenSegue (talk)

Bot

[edit]

Hello. Why is bot adding point in time (P585) to X username (P2002)? What does it mean? Eurohunter (talk) 05:23, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Eurohunter: it's the point in time those qualifiers apply to that username (i.e. when the data was fetched). BrokenSegue (talk) 05:51, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
But it not says it. It's missleading and should use something other or maybe some new item may be created. Eurohunter (talk) 07:44, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Eurohunter: I'm sorry I don't understand you. What do you mean "But it not says it."? How could it be more clear? Do you mean property not item? There is a fundamental limitation of wikibase that we cannot have qualifiers on qualifiers so this is the best we can do. This bot has been operating this way for many months without complaint. BrokenSegue (talk) 15:55, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I mean it is only "date". It should be somehow secribed what is this data. I had same request with similar bot edits. I will look at it. Eurohunter (talk) 19:17, 3 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello. So we could have new item for it. Something like "data of number of viewers/listeners" due to number of viewers/listeners (P5436)? Eurohunter (talk) 13:21, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
well we already have social media followers (P8687) which is being populated. what property do you have in mind? maybe do a test edit as an example? BrokenSegue (talk) 14:52, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BorkedBot "unknown value" statements

[edit]

I think BorkedBot is malfunctioning. It is adding "unknown value" qualifiers for X numeric user ID (P6552) and end time (P582) for X username (P2002) statements which have readily extractable X numeric user ID (P6552) values. Dancter (talk) 00:44, 28 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Chakwood

[edit]

Hi. There is a person who has made a lot of self prop here, in Commons and in WPs. He has already -it seems- enough sources not to let us claim lack of notability. Therefore, at least we should help them to learn where to use capital letters and where small ones in their endeavours. In the article with the same title above, I guess "Name Given" could be a good point to start with... Thx in advance. --E4024 (talk) 14:52, 26 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The article at the WP that you administer... --E4024 (talk) 01:06, 27 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@E4024: I don't understand why you're contacting me on wikidata about a problem on enwiki? I rolled back that edit but I don't understand why you asked me to do that instead of just doing it yourself. BrokenSegue (talk) 03:03, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the effort. Why I did not do something myself is clear, I cannot do anything there. It has been three weeks since I wrote to you, so I do not really remember why I asked you anything at the beginning. (Something related to Wikidata must have triggered that in those days.) As regards why I returned to add a link recently is because I saw your intentions to become an admin. I wanted to see your reaction to requests from ordinary users. Take care. --E4024 (talk) 13:33, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah sorry I did not realize you were banned on enwiki. I would've more quickly understood/responded to your request if you had said so. BrokenSegue (talk) 13:46, 13 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Probably the best thing that happened to me there. --E4024 (talk) 14:02, 24 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our gift is better than the one at Commons or Meta)

Here's your badge: {{User admin}}/{{#babel:admin}} and {{Admin topicon}}. Enjoy!

Congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat, Wikidata:Requests for comment, and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-adminconnect. If you need access, you can flag someone down at #wikidataconnect. You may find Wikidata:Guide to Adminship to be useful reading. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (Check Wikipedia:Wikidata/Wikidatans (Q14964498).)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators and Wikidata:Administrators/Timeline. You may also like to add your username to this list if you would not like that items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

[edit]

Hi BrokenSegue,

The best match for the word "cena" in Spanish is "dinner" in English NOT "supper".

Therefore "cena" Link was moved to Q657221 that corresponds to dinner.

This displacement is in line with completing links for the 10,000 Articles every Wikipedia should have.

I would appreciate, you undo your change as to leave it the way I arranged.

Best regards

--Uruk (talk) 01:56, 4 November 2021 (UTC) (Spanish Wikipedia)[reply]

Ok.
sorry probably I was confused . ! I apologize. Regards Uruk Uruk (talk) 02:01, 4 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I note your comment about not having a Spanish link to supper. But if you read the supper article, it explains that in modern times, supper is refering to a light snack that could be taken some time after dinner (this is in line with US practice of having dinner rather early (18:00 or 19:00 hrs), compared to Spanish or Latin America (21:00 - 22:00 hrs). !!

NoclaimsBot

[edit]

Hi BrokenSegue

Thanks for spotting (and partially fixing) the restaurant/family mixup. Don't hesitate to leave me a note if you come across others, I will fix them too.

I also had a look at the ship template you mentioned. I agree that a few should be using "ship class" or something else, but most are fine with "ship" as P31 value. Personally I find the error rate for this type of operation acceptable. NoclaimsBot should only step in when all other approaches failed. Maybe we can eventually get the lists down to 1000, but some contributors seems to be attached to empty items for redirects. --- Jura 09:06, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi BrokenSegue,

For the two, I added follower counts from some lists at Wikipedia. I was wondering if your bot could easily add counts for other users on these as well.

Maybe we should try to sort out the twitter username formatting question. Noticed that it still doesn't work how I'd expect (Topic:Wns47vr2arke8d3j). --- Jura 10:50, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jura1: The reason I never did those was because they do not provide an open API for accessing the data and I've thus far been wary of scraping data for fear of getting banned (I don't want to put a bunch of time into something just for it to break). I don't have a ton of free time at the moment due to personal stuff going on so I don't anticipate working on that for the next month or so. Though who knows maybe I'll get bored over some weekend. If we were to normalize twitter IDs I would suggest using the "correct" casing. Though a downside is that I believe users can change the casing whenever they want. It wouldn't be too hard for me to do it any which way if we had consensus (feel free to get consensus and I'll implement whatever is decided). BrokenSegue (talk) 22:51, 10 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Maybe there is a way to get them indirectly from one or the other archive. Also, an advantage of Wikidata is that we can gather them over time, but it would still be about 500/day for annual updates.
I will try to get the Twitter format sorted out. BTW, what is the "correct" casing? ;)
Any idea how complete we are for Twitter above a given threshold (e.g. 1M or 5M)? I will try to get MxM 4994 done. --- Jura 08:38, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
you're right that I could go slowly. by correct capitalization I meant the one the user selected in twitter. generally this will be something sensible (e.g. camel case). As far as coverage, at one point I manually went through the top 5k or so twitter handles and matched them manually. Unsure how far down I went before giving up. BrokenSegue (talk) 14:04, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I had gone through the catalogue on MxM as well and created items for some that we were missing. However, the catalogue is getting somewhat old and is limited to confirmed accounts. --- Jura 07:17, 12 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This place is is supposed to be free and to help and that is what I am doing. Please help me but don't just delete my item when you see that I just started adding information. I would never do that to you or anyone here. I hope you have a blessed day and please just give me time. This was nominated by @Gymnicus: under WD:N, presumably criterion 2. However, the item existed to fulfill criteria 1 and 3: to allow use of {{Wikidata Infobox}} at the relevant Commons category. Arlo Barnes (talk) 22:37, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I do not believe that wikimedia commons categories fulfill criteria 1 or 3. It says "Category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted". Though there is some debate on this issue. BrokenSegue (talk) 23:57, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That wouldn't apply to this entity, as it isn't a category item (which is a jargon for items whose label starts with `category:`, and which are usually paired with a 'parent' item). Arlo Barnes (talk) 07:16, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Arlo Barnes, BrokenSegue: As a note: This topic is currently being discussed on the talk page of Wikidata:Notability and you are welcome to participate there. --Gymnicus (talk) 08:56, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. However, I hope we can discuss this particular case without having to solve the general category, particularly since there is already an extant notability policy that would cover the item at present. Arlo Barnes (talk) 21:48, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

The Overnia url unfortunately changed and I modified Property:P9845. I noticed you had created the URL match pattern. Could you check it's ok ? unblocking a certain user

[edit]

You recently posted about unblocking a certain user on the Administrators' noticeboard, which I strongly advise against. Though the suggested edits with {{Edit request}} may be constructive, the failure to understand the utility other users find in nontrivial references on identifiers—explained by multiple people over the last five+ months with little success—is not something that should be excused lightly. The current such request—dependent on that user's own conditions and that user's own perception of what counts as a "good" edit—suggests a continued lack of acceptance of such utility. (I post here, rather than on the noticeboard itself, in the (futile?) interest of avoiding further confrontations.) Mahir256 (talk) 20:54, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mahir256: but they specifically said they wouldn't remove references from identifiers anymore. I agree the user ought to be a better community member and accept feedback. But should we not give them another chance? What's the risk? They clearly do contribute positively in many cases. BrokenSegue (talk) 21:01, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

RfC follow-up

[edit]

Hi BrokenSegue! Wikidata:Requests for comment/Frequency of YouTube follower count data was just closed—would you be able to handle changing the bot configuration? Best, {{u|Sdkb}}talk 23:50, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdkb: yeah I'm working on it. should be ready later this week. I just hope it's fast enough. BrokenSegue (talk) 03:30, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: Ok it takes about 6 hours to run through all the yt accounts on wikidata. I'm thinking I'll set it up to run once a week with the 10%/order of magnitude rules established in the RfC. I'm donig a test run now. Should be done by EOD. BrokenSegue (talk) 18:44, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! I'll follow through with the en-WP infobox integration proposal probably tomorrow (I'll ping you). {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:46, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and one other thing: looking at w:Template:Infobox YouTube personality, I'm noticing that total channel views is also displayed. Does your bot include that information when it does the updates? {{u|Sdkb}}talk 18:54, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: It does not. There is currently no place to store that information other than as a qualifier on YouTube channel ID (P2397) which doesn't store a historical record. My job writes that out once as qualifier and then never actually updates it. I could update that I suppose but what would the update rules be? Just update that when the subscriber info changes? Or should it update on its own? BrokenSegue (talk) 18:57, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, it seems like we've run up again against the issue of not having great properties to hold social media info. So probably check to make sure there's consensus before adding it that way. But if folks are okay having it as a qualifier there, I'd say yes, update it at the same time so that it can be a single edit and the infobox update date can be displayed with a single date rather than having to have it individually for each value. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:02, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb: ok the job is setup to run weekly now. good luck making the changes on enwiki. as for views, we do have the right property for it but the problem is that that property makes sense for the channel and not the person and most of the articles in question are about people not channels. things get complicated when we have to model a wiki article with multiple wikidata items. Request about possible undo of deletions

[edit]

After I was largely blocked, the Episodis administrator deleted all of my editing requests regarding the undoing of identifier deletions and the respective discussion pages. Because the administrator Sannita himself still spoke of finding a consensus, I do not find these deletions from Episodis correct. If you support my opinion or can at least understand it, then I would be happy about an action that does not have to be the same as undoing the deletions. If not, then you can simply ignore this request, delete it or simply mark it as "unfulfilled". --Gymnicus (talk) 10:32, 31 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

QS help

[edit]

Please can you guide me on how to remove references to P2580 (P2580) as this property is being deleted? I do not think QS can remove references in this manner. Unfortunately I don't have the free time to help with this task. My life has gotten busy. BrokenSegue (talk) 01:56, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Undeletion of records

[edit]

Hi BrokenSegue.

We are a group of researchers who are working on international economic elites and we have started collecting and uploading data to wikidata. In that process we are creating the first initial entries that will be filled with extra data. These are all - from an academic standpoint - notable people who lead large multinational firms. But these records have been deleted. See: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q112188951 for an example. Is it possible to undelete them or have a dialogue over whether they should be deleted or not?

- Anton Antongl (talk) 11:44, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Just a quick note: I mentioned notability issues and offered to help via email but then I had email problems. I will try to write the email today. Sorry for the inconvenience. --Emu (talk) 12:50, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Antongl Okay, I’ve written the email and outlined several possibilities to establish notability. Please also consider describing your project at your user page because of The Terms of User – Paid contributions without disclosure.
BrokenSegue Your deletion decision was certainly sound given the state the items were in. However, I would volunteer to reevaluate them based on additional research, undo their deletion and establish their notability through additional statements. Is that okay for you? --Emu (talk) 16:30, 25 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Emu: unfortunately I am too busy to look into this at this time. However I trust you to look into this and undelete if you feel that's appropriate. BrokenSegue (talk) 00:31, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BrokenSegue Thank you for your trust! I have completed the batch, see User:Emu/Business (after the horizontal line). --Emu (talk) 15:00, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Dear BrokenSegue,

may you please – after evaluating this request – move all Wikiquote links from secrecy (Q1503443) to secret (Q113925598)?

Thanks in advance. Christel's Mett (talk) 21:59, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Christel's Mett: no that would not be right. many of the wikiquote links use the adjectival form (like the enwiki wikiquote link). BrokenSegue (talk) 22:03, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are free just to move those which deal about the noun (Q1084) secret.--Christel's Mett (talk) 22:04, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Christel's Mett: I only speak English so I cannot confirm which mean what. You are free to move them. Though I'm not sure it matters to distinguish between the two concepts. BrokenSegue (talk) 22:06, 11 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
