Inappropriate short descriptions

[edit]

A short description should contain as few specific details as possible, as its main purpose is to avoid ambiguity with similar Wikidata objects; again, as I already suggested, please read "Help:Description", particularly the section "Descriptions are not definitions".

Your long and overly detailed definition in "Third Party Logistics" (Q1500317) is inappropriate as a short description on Wikidata. We have Wikipedia for detailed in-depth explanations of subjects. Maxeto0910 (talk) 17:55, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Maxeto0910: Hi,
I've noticed that many users put in long descriptions since many years. Would you delete a full description (example from a very active user) and replace it with a more mediocre text?--David Rogers Webb (talk) 18:12, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Your given example is neither very long nor very specific, as it just mentions that it is a gate and where it is located.
If it would mention the color of the gate, the year it was built, the designer etc., then yes, I would replace it with a shorter text which is reduced to the essential information. Maxeto0910 (talk) 21:31, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maxeto0910: Ok, please link some examples of descriptions of which you think they are too long or complex.--David Rogers Webb (talk) 21:33, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

About Notability

[edit]

Hi David Rogers Webb. Thank you for contributing to Wikidata. I see that you recently created an item that does not clearly indicate its notability. The Wikidata project only accepts items that meet its notability criteria, and your item is therefore likely to be deleted soon. In brief, items must have an associated Wikipedia article, must be needed for statements on another notable item, or must have both identifiers and serious sources. For the last case, a good indication of notability would be multiple articles about the subject in independent publications like newspapers or magazines. You can add such sources as references to specific claims using reference URL (P854), or as top-level claims using described at URL (P973).

Also, this may not apply in this specific case, but you should know that we discourage editors from contributing on topics with which they have a strong personal connection, as this may present a conflict of interest. If you are being paid to edit here, then you are obliged to disclose this. For a longer version, you might find it useful to read the essay "How to create an item on Wikidata so that it won't get deleted".  94rain talk 22:03, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have just withdrawn my deletion request for warehousing company (Q123937947). Please let me know if I made any mistakes in other deletion requests. 94rain talk 22:22, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@94rain: I am more new than you, so I really don't know what's right or wrong yet. I've commented why I think that these shipping companies are much larger than companies which are currently notable. Kind regards, --David Rogers Webb (talk) 22:30, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Just to chime in that when we talk about "notability" here on Wikidata, it really is disconnected from any conventional real-world use of that word. I'm afraid it's pointless to talk about how large a company is. Instead we construe notability narrowly in terms of our notability criteria, for example whether the item has identifiers and sources. This is explained more accessibly in User:Bovlb/How_to_create_an_item_on_Wikidata_so_that_it_won't_get_deleted#Establishing_notability. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 22:51, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
