General Q&A

[edit]

Hello @Bodhisattwa - As previously mentioned, I'd got some questions about Wikidata so asking them here. So first up, do you know how to get the area of a particular place/monument depicted on the map, something like the area (grey space) of this college shown in the infobox. Is this something by default that comes up or can it be adjusted manually? - DesiBoy101 (talk) 09:53, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That defined area comes from Openstreetmap entry of Fergusson College which backlinks to the corresponding Wikidata item. See https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#map=17/18.52407/73.83883 -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 15:44, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa - So do you have any experience working with OpenStreetMap? It looks promising in terms of what can be achieved by contributing and extracting data from it. DesiBoy101 (talk) 17:21, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I do have some experience editing on OSM, but I don't focus much on there as they already have a very active community which does a lot of wonderful work there. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 17:55, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa - definitely worth taking a look then. Any suggestions on how to get started with OSM?
Further, I noticed that there are numerous Wikidata entries of Indian banks and post offices (which I'm assuming is nationwide). Was there a particular idea behind importing this data and make something useful out of it? And are there plans to improve it in the future? DesiBoy101 (talk) 18:12, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You can check OSM wiki to know how to get started. The bank and post offices were uploaded to have their presence on Wikidata. Some of them are outdated though and some needs improvement. But there are other priorities for me now, so can't give much attention there. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 18:31, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa - Alright, that's sorted. Coming to the roads and wards of a city. Does it really makes sense in the Wikidata context to have a particular road and ward in the data of a building? Especially for metro cities which have dynamic boundaries and thus, the changes in wards. If yes, what would be an effective way to import such data? - DesiBoy101 (talk) 05:59, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO, its important to have them. Wards and roads and boundaries might change over time but that change can also be reflected on Wikidata too using different qualifiers. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 06:29, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bodhisattwa - Yeah, that's definitely doable according to the future updates. So what would be an effective way to import such data? I've actually seen (and vaguely tried) OpenRefine and Quick Statements, which I think are the go-to tools. I did not understand much of OpenRefine though. merge into older items

[edit]

Hi, please merge newer items into older items. For example, Q17284837 was an older item and Ratnagiri Fort (Q113560234) was a newer item. You should have merged Q113560234 into Q17284837 and not vice versa. That would have kept the history of the older items intact. Bodhisattwa (talk) 03:45, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Bodhisattwa, I do follow the new to old merge convention. Must've missed it this time. Will keep that in mind for future. Thanks for the input. DesiBoy101 (talk) 05:51, 10 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
