undisclosed paid editing

[edit]

DieProfiloptimierer, based on your contributions I suspect that you are violating the Wikimedia Terms of use by making undisclosed paid edits. Be aware that this may result in a block of your account. ---MisterSynergy (talk) 12:10, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MisterSynergy: Oopsi, sorry! I wasn't aware that there's a Wikidata-Policy about that as well. As the person in question is a german professor and I am working on an article on him there in the german wikipedia – in full disclosure of the paid editing, I think I just assumed it's clear. In the german-language wikipedia it's not generally forbidden. Would you let me know where I can find the respective guidelines for Wikidata? I'll try to research it as well, but not sure if I find it. --DieProfiloptimierer (talk) 17:46, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikimedia Terms of Use apply to Wikidata, and there is no local policy which overrides them. Particularly a part of section 4 is relevant here. The ToU are linked in the project footer, below the text editor (outside the main namespace, e.g. here), and I think you probably have confirmed them at least while making your very first edit in the main namespace as well. —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:07, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MisterSynergy: Oh yes, of course! So the statement on the user page will be sufficient and/or on the talk page of the entry? Or were there any other objections you had when you erased the entry? He still is a professor a. D. and author and thus should be relevant for an entry in WD. If you have doubts about notability maybe I should wait until the article in the wikipedia is published? I'd be happy to hear your thoughts. I have no clue why the VIAF- and GND-numbers that used to work a few years ago were erased in the databases, as Prof. Scharlach has published quite a lot of articles and a number of books. It's a mystery I can't solve as I don't know how these databases work. But if you look into the VIAF history the number used to exist. Do you have an explanation or know someone who might know what happened here? --DieProfiloptimierer (talk) 11:33, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would recommend to provide a Wikidata-local list of paid edits or edit series and to which customers they are related.
For Wikidata notability it does not matter that Scharlach is a professor. We understand "notability" as a characteristic of the item, not of the described entity; i.e. we usually say "the item does not meet the notability requirements", rather than "person X is not notable". Whatever can be verified and linked against independent external sources is deemed notable here (and we are somewhat critical about the "independent external sources" here). Scharlach's VIAF identifier has been withdrawn, as only a GND entry was linked from his cluster, but it was a Tn type GND entry (a "name" entry). GND contained plenty of those, but they do refer to the name, not the person. Earlier this year, all Tn entries were deleted from GND (i.e. invalidated), so I guess the VIAF ID redaction is a direct consequence of this step at GND. ---MisterSynergy (talk) 22:32, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thanks for the insights into the GND/VIAF problem! So far there were no WD edits on our behalf or through our account, Mr. Scharlach was the first. My strategy thus will be to come back to the Wikidata problem after publishing the german Wikipedia article. I understand that the necessary qualifier then will be provided with the WP entry. And then, of course, I will list him on my WD profile page as a client. Your advice was very helpful! --DieProfiloptimierer (talk) 14:05, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MisterSynergy: Mr. Scharlach now has a valid entry in the GND. Would you consider to reverse the deletion of the WikiData entry for Matthias Scharlach? I also linked his name in my profile. GND: 1220702994, Link to the data entry: https://portal.dnb.de/opac.htm?method=simpleSearch&cqlMode=true&query=nid%3D1220702994. Have a nice weekend. --DieProfiloptimierer (talk) 10:26, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The item about him is at Matthias Scharlach (Q100400639), so there is nothing to undelete as far as I see. You can cimply add the GND identifier to the item. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:38, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will! --DieProfiloptimierer (talk) 12:20, 6 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
