Ioannes Raius[edit]

Hi, Jim. I'm just starting the article about John Ray. Did you have a source for "Nutlea Nigra" and "Magna Raines"? I guessed not, so I removed them, but please tell me if there is a source: I can cite it in the article. Andrew Dalby (talk) 20:43, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Andrew Dalby:, yes, these will have come from the Oxford place names volumes; I have paper copies but not at the house here. Some of the volumes are also available online. Are these both in (former) Essex? I haven't added any labels that I didn't have sources for. I intended to place all the source information into the Wikibooks pages for these names, however I still haven't got the citation module to work there. --JimKillock (talk) 21:39, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
These will both be in The Place-Names of Essex (English Place-Name Society, Vol. 12), Cambridge University Press, 1935 by P. H. Reaney. One can also be found in the Cambridge Dictionary of English Place-Names, Victor Watts; Braintree is on p78. Black Notley isn't tho, although you csan find references to Nutlea Nigra in other books on Google Books. --JimKillock (talk) 21:51, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks very much for replying. Google can find one instance of "Magna Reines" in a text that it can't show me but the context seems right. Google can't find me any "Nutlea Nigra"; it depends how you look, no doubt. I believe you now and I will revert the deletions. Andrew Dalby (talk) 20:24, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrew Dalby: See Registrum Simons de Sudbiria Diocesis Londoniensis A.D. 1362-1375 for instance, with slightly different spelling of Nutley. There is also Great Notley and White Notley (Alba) IIRC, so I suspect I regularised Nutlea between these. --JimKillock (talk) 21:37, 11 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
