When creating new items, could you please enter the label/description as English (en) rather than en-gb, when it is the same? The software automatically uses the "en" label for any English variant if there is no label specifically for that variant, but the "en-gb" label won't be used unless that variant is specifically requested, so a label for "en-gb" is only needed when it is different than the "en" label.

The last guidance I read was to create in your native language, which is en-gb and not en, the fact that wikidata doesn't have proper language fallbacks for this scenario is a technical failure that has been noted several times already (and the fact we have a bot that handles this scenario shows thats it a issue).

If the guidance has since changed, can you point me to the updated docs?

I am not aware of any official policy; my request was based only on how the software works. Because of the way the software works, it is better to enter the label/description as en rather than en-gb if it is not intended to be different than en, and the only benefit to entering a label for en-gb is when it is different than the en label. I just looked around for a policy or guideline but I only found informal comments like "I think there's agreement that en-GB and en-CA should not be filled when it's the same as en" (Help talk:Label#Regional English?). However if you know of a policy or guideline that says otherwise then I am interested in the rationale and whether it is addressing different regional variants of a language or different base languages.
