Hey @PAC2:, I just saw your work via the Wikidata weekly summary #498! I'm a researcher at the Wikimedia Foundation but as a side-project, I built something similar to help raise awareness around linking practices and how they interact with gender (and other attributes). You can find the gender script from this page. I actually setup a backend with preprocessed gender data as opposed to using SPARQL because I wasn't sure I could do what I wanted efficiently via SPARQL (but glad to see you made it work and I'll have to check out your code). The drawback of my approach is that it needs occasionially refreshed with new data whereas your approach is always up-to-date with Wikidata. This message is mainly an FYI in case my work is useful for you. If you have suggestions about additional directions / ways to merge the work, I'd be curious. Also feel free to build off the code obviously because the more tools to help bring light to these issues, the better. --Isaac (WMF) (talk) 18:24, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Isaac (WMF):. Thanks for your message. I'm really happy to see that other people care about this topic and I think that both approaches (the API and the SPARQL query) are useful. I've also tested several methods. In the first place I've been using Jupyter notebooks to get the data (here and here). It's great because it's useful to get the information at some point for a great number of articles. Observable's notebooks are useful to look at a small number of articles (here). What is the next step for you? Are you planning to write research on the topic? PAC2 (talk) 20:08, 14 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the additional links. This work fits into a broader research agenda my team has around better understanding these types of knowledge gaps and designing tools to help bridge them. You can find details about our "understanding" side here (Taxonomy of Knowledge Gaps) and current work is focused on better tools for measuring and visualizing these gaps. We've also been focusing a lot of effort on building tools to support editors. For instance, my colleagues helped to build an algorithm that supports new editors in adding links (add-a-link) and now we're discussing more how to better align some of these tools with community initiatives. I've written a bit about this here. I hadn't planned to do any formal research around the link+gender tool but past research has shown that the gender gap shows up in linking behavior too (see WikiConf NA talk). In general, you can find a lot more information on our team page too about the sorts of projects we're working on. --Isaac (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Gender diversity inspector from cawiki

[edit]

Hi, I saw your "Gender diversity inspector", good idea and good tool. I'd like to promote it in cawiki community which is very committed with gender gap topics. However, this project doesn't appear as option. Could you please include it ?. Thanks Amadalvarez (talk) 11:58, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. I've added ca.wikipedia.org to https://observablehq.com/@pac02/gender-diversity-inspector and https://observablehq.com/@pac02/explore-gender-diversity-in-a-single-wikipedia-article

I'm really happy to see that the cawiki community is interested in gender diversity. Let me know if there is some initiative of interest.

And of course, feel free to add more feedback here. PAC2 (talk) 05:03, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @PAC2 hope you're doing well ! I am going round your tools as I am preparing an interview annnd some of the links no longer work. Do you plann doing a update ? Nattes à chat (talk) 14:10, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

For eg this one https://public.paws.wmcloud.org/User:PAC2/Gender%20diversity%20in%20articles%20about%20occupations%20in%20Wikipedia%20in%20French.ipynb Nattes à chat (talk) 14:11, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your message.
The notebook is now here https://public-paws.wmcloud.org/User:PAC2/Gender%20diversity%20in%20articles%20about%20occupations%20in%20Wikipedia%20in%20French.ipynb
You just need to change public.paws.wmcloud.org to public-paws.wmcloud.org.
I don't plan to update the analyse in the next weeks. I've lots of other ideas in mind :) PAC2 (talk) 20:33, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
