Japanese aliases[edit]

Hi Sakretsu,

I've seen that you are adding a lot of aliases for Japanese names. May I ask for that CSV so I can upload it for Asturian language? Thanks. YoaR (talk) 08:45, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @YoaR: actually, it's not a single CSV. I have to come up with a specific one per language, since I'm adding aliases only for the current labels that each language has. I can do that next, my previous batch is over anyway :-)--Sakretsu (talk) 09:40, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great @Sakretsu:, thanks! YoaR (talk) 10:33, 14 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Japanese names and name in kana[edit]

You added two Japanese names in native language for badminton players, so the list Wikidata:WikiProject Badminton/Name decreased a little bit. Feel free to look at this list and add some more missing Japanese names and name in kana. Thanks a lot Florentyna (talk) 07:05, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Florentyna: everything's done, except for E. Emeri who is recorded as E・エマール in katakana. There is a good chance he was a foreign player or a naturalized Japanese, so I wouldn't add any transcription. Also, check this out.--Sakretsu (talk) 11:20, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, this was quite fast. I already found, that for some Japanese badminton player names is missing the name in Kana (User:Florentyna#Japanese name without kana). On some other things I am already working since some years mainly on de-wiki: Finding the missing data for de:Japanische Badminton-Juniorenmeisterschaft from 1982 to 2003 (even some fragments would be nice), finding the correct transcriptions for the names in brackets on de:Japanische Badmintonmeisterschaft, de:Japanische Badminton-Erwachsenenmeisterschaft, de:Japanische Badminton-Studentenmeisterschaft. In the very early phase of transcription is de:Japanische Badminton-Seniorenmeisterschaft. Some thoughts are summarized here: de:Diskussion:Japanische Badmintonmeisterschaft. Every suggestion is welcome. Best Florentyna (talk) 12:02, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Some transcripted Japanese names for seniors can be found here: [1], [2], [3], [4]. Florentyna (talk) 12:09, 20 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Here is another site with a lot of data, but only in Japanese and often only available as scans: [5]. Florentyna (talk) 19:07, 21 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Florentyna: the results and participants of the junior competition from 1982 to 2003 are listed in these pdf files. However, as long as sources do not mention Japanese names but in kanji, finding their correct transcriptions may be impossible or may take me too long. Unfortunately, I can only help you with those missing names in kana.--Sakretsu (talk) 00:12, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, every help is welcome. Like I already said, I working on this already a long time and it will take even longer to re-work all the history. [6] was the start for Japan 10 years ago, and a lot happened for Japanese badminton on dewiki, enwiki, wikidata, jawiki. So now you also contributed to this topic and I hope to see some edits in the fututre from you here, again. Best regards and many thanks Florentyna (talk) 04:22, 22 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Instance of [demographic]?[edit]

Hi, I noticed you've recently been batch-adding "instance of [shōnen|seinen]" to some manga items. I don't feel like "instance of" is the best property for this information. We wouldn't say for a film for example that it's an instance of "horror". Perhaps "intended public" would be better?

Either way, the target demographic is not an inherent quality of the manga work itself, but rather the magazine it is being serialized in. This type of information is best just kept to the manga magazines' items (which could be followed via published in). Opencooper (talk) 19:40, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Opencooper: the values I moved from genre (P136) to instance of (P31) are subclasses of manga (Q8274) which represent "[shōnen/seinen/shōjo/etc.] manga", that is manga for boys/young adults/girls and so on. The intended public is specified by the items themselves, for example shōnen (Q231302) (in Japanese 少年漫画 shōnen manga) are designed for boy (Q3010) (in Japanese 少年 shōnen). If you're not convinced yet, we could discuss about this here bringing the matter to the attention of related projects on Wikipedia.--Sakretsu (talk) 22:30, 25 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I get what you're doing and I'm not against the information being there, but I'm not 100% on how it fits in regarding structured data. It just sounds off to me that it's an "instance of" and I thought we mostly limited "instance of" to the main thing something is. For example every person is only "instance of Human" and not "instance of Plumber". Instance of "[demographic] manga" just sounds too specific. It's not a strong disagreement, but when you're batch-editing it tends to affect a lot of items so I wanted to make sure what you're aiming for. I'm fine with you doing it if you feel it's acceptable, as your other edits seem fine. Opencooper (talk) 00:56, 26 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Opencooper: well, while plumber is just a profession which doesn't define a human being in its entirety, the state of creative works looks problematic due to genres. I've done some research, and as you can see here and here it is considered correct to add instances of anthology film (Q336144), but not of novel (Q8261). If we think about manga targets, things get even more complicated because it's not clear wheather they are comic genres (for example, ja.wiki categorizes them as such). As manga (Q8274) itself is instance of (P31)comic genre (Q20087698), I guess in a sense they could be. However, the more I look at this, the more I'm uncertain.--Sakretsu (talk) 23:58, 27 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Chamorro instead of Chinese[edit]

Hi! Here you added Chamorro instead of Chinese. Is in because Italian Wikipedia uses "ch" as a code for it or something? I wonder if one should check for other such errors. Wikisaurus (talk) 19:20, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikisaurus: Hi :-) Given that Italian Wikipedia uses the ISO 639-1 codes, I believe the cause was just a typo in the external links. I imported several values from there, so I couldn't notice it. Thanks for the correction!--Sakretsu (talk) 23:07, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gadget per VIAF[edit]

Ciao! Grazie mille come sempre, --Epìdosis 16:17, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Content Security Policy: The page’s settings observed the loading of a resource at https://viaf.org/viaf/14438111/viaf.json (“default-src”). A CSP report is being sent.
[Error] [Report Only] Refused to connect to https://viaf.org/viaf/14438111/viaf.json because it appears in neither the connect-src directive nor the default-src directive of the Content Security Policy.

--Bargioni (talk) 09:04, 25 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[WMF Board of Trustees - Call for feedback: Community Board seats] Meetings with the Wikidata community[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees is organizing a call for feedback about community selection processes between February 1 and March 14. While the Wikimedia Foundation and the movement have grown about five times in the past ten years, the Board’s structure and processes have remained basically the same. As the Board is designed today, we have a problem of capacity, performance, and lack of representation of the movement’s diversity. Our current processes to select individual volunteer and affiliate seats have some limitations. Direct elections tend to favor candidates from the leading language communities, regardless of how relevant their skills and experience might be in serving as a Board member, or contributing to the ability of the Board to perform its specific responsibilities. It is also a fact that the current processes have favored volunteers from North America and Western Europe. In the upcoming months, we need to renew three community seats and appoint three more community members in the new seats. This call for feedback is to see what processes can we all collaboratively design to promote and choose candidates that represent our movement and are prepared with the experience, skills, and insight to perform as trustees?

In this regard, two rounds of feedback meetings are being hosted to collect feedback from the Wikidata community. Two rounds are being hosted with the same agenda, to accomodate people from various time zones across the globe. We will be discussing ideas proposed by the Board and the community to address the above mentioned problems. Please sign-up according to whatever is most comfortable to you. You are welcome to participate in both as well!

Also, please share this with other volunteers who might be interested in this. Let me know if you have any questions. KCVelaga (WMF), 14:33, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
