Ice hockey venues[edit]

@J 1982 : Hi, I have just merged the wikidata items for svwiki Kategori:Ishallar and enwiki Category:Indoor ice hockey venues and their subcategories at Q8547646. I see that you have made some further adjustments: could you explain if I missed anything when doing the merges? I am now thinking that it would be better to merge svwiki Kategori:Ishallar, dawiki Kategori:Ishaller, etc with enwiki category Category:Ice hockey venues (Q8531223) as most languages have categories for either "Ice hockey venues" or "Indoor ice hockey venues", but not both. "Ishall" ("Ice hall") usually means indoor ice hockey rink. J 1982 (talk) 22:20, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@J 1982: Hi, I am new to wikidata talk and probably didn't explain myself very well. The main reason I contacted you is that you were making some adjustments to the categories I had just merged, so I was wondering if I should have done the merges slightly differently?
I have now posted my second question at en:Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Ice_Hockey#Ice_hockey_venue_categories. en:Category:Ice hockey venues and en:Category:Indoor ice hockey venues seem almost identical as only 29 venues are classified as outdoor, so I am wondering whether the indoor category should be merged into the general venue category. Currently 17 wikis have categories like de:Kategorie:Eishockeystadion and it:Categoria:Stadi del ghiaccio, which link to en:Category:Ice hockey venues; 10 wikis have categories like sv:Kategori:Ishallar, which link to en:Category:Indoor ice hockey venues and 6 wikis (Bashkir, English, Persian, Korean, Thai, Chinese) have categories linked to both. It would be better to link Eishockeystadion and Ishallar to the same data item and Category:Ice hockey venues is the more popular, if a less exact translation. @J 1982 : Hi, I linked da:Kategori:Ishaller i Danmark to en:Category:Ice hockey venues in Denmark for the reasons I just explained as you had not responded. I see you have now linked it to en:Category:Indoor ice hockey venues in Denmark. Please can you discuss why you disagree with my moves before making further changes to the Nordic Ishall categories. TSventon (talk) 11:45, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The words ""Ishaller" (Danish and Norwegian), Ishallar" (Swedish) and "jäähalli" (Finnish) all mean "indoor ice hockey rinks" (directly translated: "ice hall"). J 1982 (talk) 11:58, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@J 1982: Thanks, I understand Swedish quite well and I understood your previous explanation of the meaning of Ishall. However I looked at what was linked to the categories and found
I therefore think that is more useful to link the Nordic categories to "Ice hockey venues" than "Indoor ice hockey venues" as they would be linked to 17 further languages rather than 6. In this case I would argue that linking more languages is more important than a slightly more exact translation. In practice most ice hockey venues are indoor so in many countries all "Ice hockey venues" covered by wikipedia are "Indoor ice hockey venues". TSventon (talk) 13:32, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It is not about how many languages are linked. J 1982 (talk) 22:43, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@J 1982: Please could you link to a wikidata policy to support your argument? TSventon (talk) 09:12, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
