Coptodon kottae & Tilapia kottae[edit]

Greetings! I just noticed that you has moved parts of interlanguage links from item Q1940901 (Tilapia kottae) to item Q28531785 (Coptodon kottae). Originally, item Q28531785 was without interlanguage links and it was pretty useless because T. kottae and C. kottae are same species (T. kottae is just a synonym according to FishBase, IUCN and many other sites). I think these items would be good to merge, although some Wikipedias has created article with formerly name T. kottae. What do you think? James Chudrie (talk) 10:18, 3 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank you for your input. Merging the items would be okay on for example Wikispecies, but that's because Wikispecies deals with taxonomy. However in Wikidata we almost never do these kinds of merges – the reason being that Wikidata doesn't handle taxonomy, but database items. Both Tilapia kottae and Coptodon kottae are separate, unique and valid taxon names (rather than separate taxa, and regardless of their respective taxonomical status). Hence both Tilapia kottae (Q1940901) and Coptodon kottae (Q28531785) have their place as unique Wikidata database items. It should also be noted that their taxonomical status is mentioned in their respective Wikidata items. You can see in the Coptodon kottae item that Tilapia kottae is clearly stated as the original combination (P1403), and reversely in the Tilapia kottae item where it says that the name is the protonym (Q10640897) of Coptodon kottae.
It is of course unfortunate that some of the Wikipedias don't update their respective taxon pages to reflect the actual status in regards to syonyms etc., but that must be handled on each separate Wikipedia, and not here in Wikidata. Kind regards, Tommy Kronkvist, 06:49, 4 September 2022 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you for the extensive answer! You are totally right. Instead of we would merge these items, we could update and move Wikipedia articles that are with former name. And then item Tilapia kottae will be without Wikipedia links because they have all been moved to item Coptodon kottae. Like I just did yesterday for item Q1941013 (Coptodon flava). Call for participation in a task-based online experiment[edit]

Dear Tommy_Kronkvist,

I hope you are doing well,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I am working on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender model that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our model based on your previous edits.

Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published in a research venue.

The experiment should take no more than 15 minutes, and it will be held next week.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfA1wfdBfCRlcG3WhDyc-V8lzgPNx3fDFCNXkyn4CSwahXZ_A/viewform?usp=sf_link

Then, I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about my project, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa

In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Sorry, but you'll need to re-add all the descriptions. Another user merged a category into the page, resulting in many dozens of incorrect descriptions and blocking the addition of the gallery page. I have to Restore the pre-merge version of the page. --EncycloPetey (talk) 21:52, 23 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
