This is a help page for the Projector tool. See also the original blog post about this tool.
If you are new to Wikidata, check out the Introduction and the Glossary.

Projector is a tool that shows maps and lists with Wikidata items for a specific topic, usually a location. The topic is specified in a subpage of a WikiProject (both are linked from the tool). As an example, see the Projector for Corfu.

Note: To make any changes to Wikidata, it is recommended that you create a user account. If you already have a user account on Wikipedia, it should work here as well. To work with other tools mentioned on this page, you will need a user account, and also approve the use of each tool prior to first use (you will be prompted accordingly).

Map[edit]

The map is the default view of Projector. It shows items with coordinates relevant for the topic. There are two ways to specify items that will be shown here:

Legend[edit]

Wikidata items are shown as semi-transparent circles, one per item. Blue circles indicate items with an image, red circles indicate items without. Items with a thin border have a located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) statement, items with a thick border do not (hit: go to the item and add one!). You can click on the circle to see a link to the item, its name, supplementary information, and (for blue circles) an image.

Via the "Show Mix'n'match entries" checkbox below the map, you can also show entries with coordinates on Mix'n'match. The entries will be displayed as small, green circles. Entries that are already associated with a Wikidata item have a thin border, those without an item have a thick border. You can click on the circle to get links and information about the entry. When you follow a link to a Mix'n'match entry, you can associate it with an existing Wikidata item, or create a new one (if you are sure it does not already exist!).

Areas[edit]

You can see the current areas via the "Show areas" checkbox below the map. All items on Wikidata with coordinates within the areas will be shown, no matter their located in the administrative territorial entity (P131).

You can add a new area by checking "Add map area" below the map. A default area selector will appear. Move the map and drag the area selector to cover (all or part of) the desired area, while trying to exclude non-related areas. When you are done, copy the area definition line (from the ";" to the "⇐" arrow, not including the arrow itself). Add the line to the configuration page. The area will be used the next time you load the Projector page.

Lists[edit]

Lists are generated based on the location items (either via located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) or coordinates in areas, see above).

Lists can be filtered by:

Only items that match all filter conditions are shown.

There are links to several tools for the items in this list (all items, though some links appear specifically just for the filtered ones), including:

Locations[edit]

This list shows the location items. This is a superset of the items shown on the map. It will also include items within a located in the administrative territorial entity (P131) tree, but without coordinates (you can filter for such items, and add coordinates where appropriate).

People[edit]

This list shows people who were born in, died in, or have worked in, any of the location items.

Things[edit]

This is a list of "things" related to the location items. They include:

  • local food
  • local dress
  • local traditions
  • local organisations

The list may also include some items already on the "Locations" list.

Works[edit]

This is a list of creative works (including books, songs, movies, poems etc.) about one of the location items.

Mix'n'match[edit]

A list of relevant Mix'n'match catalogs can be specified on the configuration page (see Corfu example). They will be shown as a list in this tab.

Configuration page[edit]

The configuration page is a subpage of a WikiProject. For a given project "XXX", the page name must be "Wikidata:WikiProject XXX/projector.config" (Corfu example). The Projector URL will then be https://projector.toolforge.org/#/XXX .

The configuration page contains a list of key-value-pairs encoded as definition lists:

;key:value

If you have multiple, sequential entries with the same key, you can omit the key in all but the first row:

;key:value1
:value2
:value3

All rows that do not begin with either ";" or ":" are ignored, so you can freely add comments in other lines.

Where a key or a value can be of the form Pxxx/Qxxx, you can also use "{{P|xxx}}"/"{{Q|xxx}}". That will improve the display on the rendered wiki page.

Valid keys are:

P131
A "root location". The value must be an item in the form "Qxxx".
area
A JSON array consisting of two arrays, each representing latitude and longitude of the north-west and south-east corner of an area, respectively. These are usually generated through the "area selector" (see above).
mixnmatch
A (numeric) catalog number in the Mix'n'match tool.
